Prolific, might be an understatement here, as as Charles Luck and his Black Astronaut crew members keep churning out single after single. “Whirlwind” ft. Sticky Bud is the latest in a long line of recent releases, featuring various rappers and singers, as well as being produced by different music creators. This soundscape is based on the track “Hurricane” by Amazon’s Best Selling Toronto based flautist Jef Kearns. The flute is considered as the shyest instrument.
Although it takes the most amount of air under the instruments next to the tuba, the tone is overall warm, heartfelt and lovely. A piece of music should be regarded as an artistic synthesis, and here Jef Kearns transcends to a dreamlike grace on the flute.
Now add Charles Luck’s storytelling and Sticky Bud’s flow and verbal execution, and what you have is a sonic revelation – a sublime jazzy flute, a banging hip hop beat, and a busy and edgy urban vocal style. The combination of hip hop beat and flute is obviously intended as Jef demonstrates on Hurricane, and interestingly re-imagined here as “Whirlwind”with Sticky Bud turning in a great performance to compliment the flute melody.
The track’s reworking shows a pronounced sensitivity and empathy in creating the perfect soundscape to let both Kearns shine on his lead instrument and Sticky Bud on the vocals. The result is a sophisticated sound arrangement pushed into urban street territory that is close to perfection.
Here on this single, you are teased to want more. So one can only wait in anxious anticipation for Charles Luck’s next work, feeling assured that it will be filled with more imaginative offerings of that luscious blend of whatever genre he picks to work with and whatever rapper or singer he thinks will fit the bill, as well as anything else he can toss into that Black Astronaut mixing bowl to produce another eclectic project.
Some artists have a lot to say in a lot of material, others have little to say in all of their material, and still others speak volumes in a simple single release. Charles Luck, on this project, is the latter. Climb aboard this lyricist, songwriter, composer, and leader of the Black Astronaut collective’s smooth flying spaceship, and fly the gentle airwaves of urban, rhythm and cool!
