2UP, one half of Da Rookies has dropped the track, “Rolling Stones” off his solo EP. This is a single truly loved because it is understandable regardless of the beat, the words, and the pictures presented. The reason this is one of my favorite hip-hop singles of 2016 so far, is how 2UP uses his music to create such an intoxicating and hypnotic atmosphere.
This track bangs the whole way through and I believe that it will age even better like a fine wine over time, as the eclectic lyrics and names dropped in the song will remain legendary forever. Even the way 2UP ends “Rolling Stones” leaves you with no doubt that he will continue to release fire in the future.
Though far removed from nineties rap in its sound, 2UP brings back the roots of some of that classic lyrical cleverness – as “Rolling Stones” shows off traces of double entendres, witty metaphors, and clever similes, while his vocals ride perfectly over production. 2UP is outspoken and likeable, as he flow over a very slick, addictive rhythm and beat.
With “Rolling Stones” he creates a piece of music capable of hitting the streets as well as the pop charts. From the colorful cover artwork to the incredible sounds and rhymes that lies inside, this package perfectly encapsulates music that is extremely listenable.
It’s almost expected for a 2UP release to have excellent production, beats and rhymes, due to his adventurous collaborations as part of the Da Rookies duo. But what really resonates with “Rolling Stones” is 2UP writing, his incredible wordplay and self-reflection. “Rolling Stones” feels like an important track, a rarity in a new year that seems to be defined by artists releasing singles and albums that, while solid and in some cases more than solid, lack the definitiveness a truly great recording has.
Here, 2UP pushes himself, and the results are unforgettable. But it’s not just the energy and inspired production that make this a great song; its 2UP’s acknowledgement and exploration not only of his own talent and that of his forbearers, but those of the pioneers who defined most other genres as well.
