Born through a shared love of beer, old music, cigarettes, beer, camp-fires, beer and cider, The Quicksilver Kings are purveyors of Sixties inspired, hook-laden songs which have found airplay on both local and BBC national radio. The year 2016 will see Keith Hagger – Vocals, Steve Brodie – Guitar, Jamie Smith – Guitar, Dan Spooner – Bass and Rob Burgess – drums, release their debut album. In the meantime The Quicksilver Kings have released the “Live in Digger’s Living Room” and the “Washed Away” EP’s, the “Dirty Dresses and Sexy Skirts” single, and the latest, “The Man With No Heart” single.
As analog guy in a digital world, it wasn’t the lyrics that hooked me into the The Quicksilver Kings. Just over three minutes, its effervescence and agility, harmonies and quirkiness reminded me of something from another musical era; great musicianship. Then I listened to the lyrics. Wow. The composition, musicianship, artistry, and vocals on this track in my opinion are thoroughly deep and enjoyable. The song is full of beautifully interwoven vocal and instrumental bridges that transition seamlessly from beginning to end. Perhaps it’s the paradoxical push and pull of bittersweet pop melodies with the acoustic folk and country musical structures that are so attractive about this band.
“The Man With No Heart” has got the arrangement of a much more complicated, grandiose genre of music and yet it comes off as a pure folk-styled ballad. It takes real talent to combine the detailed elements that these guys do and make it as immediately accessible and listenable as it is. There’s nothing more I could ask for out of this kind of a band. Their music is so authentically bathed in purer retro styles that it becomes almost postmodern music. Every once in a while you’ll come across a group of musicians that inspire you to find every scrap of music that they have created – The Quicksilver Kings is one of those groups.
The Quicksilver Kings’ songs are odes to everything that actually matters in life. They transcend the simple dreck of living but thoroughly investigate and celebrate its doings too. They can make non-spiritual people converse with the universe and their inner selves. And then they have that one thing which cannot be ignored – the musicality and precise execution of every note. You will be awed with the musicianship and craft of the recording; fascinated by the lyrical content and enthralled by how easy it all is to listen to!
