Located in Helsinki, Charming Timur was created by Lauri Santeri Lohi in 2013. Not limited to any genres in particular, the project mostly focuses on Alternative Metal, Nu Metal, Shoegaze and Post-Black Metal. According to Lauri, so far Charming Timur has awakened feelings of love, hate and confusion among the people who have heard this ‘strange’ project. He describes Charming Timur as “an arrogant, in-your-face, DIY-spirited project, aimed to please only the ones truly ready for something new.”
If you are looking for an album with attitude, then this one’s for you, there are slight variations to each track with interesting riffs, melodies, power and aggression. Charming Timur has produced a ten-track album that is interesting and at the same time becomes more enjoyable with every listen.
“For The Duration Of Psychiatric Treatment” starts off with Flanger Effects And Venlafaxine, that consists of power cords and hard hitting drum beats with a growling chorus, which then quietly disappears, leaving us with whispering sentences which then switches and rips into your ears with so much musical aggression it leaves you breathless.
Charming Timur is not for the squeamish, combining strange vocal work with pure musical insanity, guitars with electronics, and all backed by pulsating rhythms. Most of the time the music has many layers to it that really give it a lot of depth. While the energy that Lauri brings to the table is just incredible.
Charming Timur takes rage, madness and angst, and refines it in so many attractive ways. Its heavy, it’s aggressive, and it takes many things from a newer breed of music, that of electronics, and couples them with various sub-genres of metal. Some people can’t accept that, however, wanting to live locked-up in a time capsule. They can’t listen to harmony, ambient dissonance, and to growling sounds at the same time. Something Charming Timur uses frequently.
Charming Timur can be tagged with the nu-metal label, but on “For The Duration Of Psychiatric Treatment” he has transformed into something else; something more complex and far-reaching. And while he still has the nu-metal trimmings, Lauri has completely defined himself and made Charming Timur a completely unique experience for anyone with an open mind that’s willing to listen.
Right from the beginning you know Charming Timur means business with this hard hitting assault on the eardrums that takes you to another realm. On standouts You Are Next, You Can’t Handle This (In A-Major), Had Enough, Close and A Human Cell, the drums are kicking, the guitar sounds are pounding, the samples are fierce, and Lauri takes the nu-metal mashup experience, to another level.
“For The Duration Of Psychiatric Treatment” is brutal, uncompromising and attacks from all sonic angles. I recommend this to anybody that is NOT looking for sugar coated radio metal music. For whatever genre you may think this is -it is absolutely hardcore!
