Swedish singer-songwriter Calle Ameln, is back with a brand new single, entitled “I Know My Whiskey”. The song which has just been officially released to the public – you can find a copy on iTunes – was handed to us for a sneak preview. If you’re a fan of modern roots music with at least a hint of blues, folk, country, rock, or a combination of all you’ve got to get your hands on this when it is finally released. Calle writes songs in a way that gives you the impression that he’s been there and done that. He conveys a lot of different emotions, which are easy to pin down as they are instantly relatable.
And when he talks about love and longing – and the fact that he knows his whiskey won’t love him, and smile at him, or even give him a kiss goodnight – you know it’s a heartfelt story you’ve heard a thousand times over. It happens in your neighborhood, it could have happened to a close friend, and it may have even happened to you.
It’s what makes Calle Ameln’s songs hit home quickly and deeply – a heartrending story sung with aching honesty. Calle avoids ambiguous, incomprehensible and cryptic lyrics so commonly used to simply sound artful. Instead he cuts to the core with words that clearly define their actions and easily communicates with listener.
Calle Ameln applies a similar formula when it comes to the music – simple, conventional instrumentation able to perfectly carry the ear-catching melody and the soulfully raspy vocals. In my book, up until now Calle has been way underrated and underplayed on this side of the Atlantic.
He is a terrific singer-songwriter, on a par with some of the best, Americana and Heartland Rock music has to offer. Moreover he is also a convincing performer of this type of material, and I know I said this before, but it is hard to believe that he actually comes from Sweden and not from somewhere like Indiana or Nebraska.
“I Know My Whiskey” is obviously designed for mainstream appreciation, as Calle has included more pop elements in the production as well as an earworm chorus that just about anybody can sing along to. All in all, this is a very satisfying single that takes you up and down, and swirls you round with words and music, showing Calle Ameln at his best.
