Thy Veils is a fantastically original, authentic and forward-thinking project, bringing a style of electronic music which draws from influences that may have been forgotten about, and sounds that may yet not have been heard, and then doing something thoroughly ingenious with that sonic blend. The project made up of founder Daniel Dorobanțu’s synths, lyrics and production, alongside Mircea Ardeleanu Jr.’s bass, which underscores Maria Hojda’s spellbinding vocals, do not simply release singles and albums, they release well thought-out concepts that become spectacular audiovisual expressions.
Thy Veils started out as a studio project in 1995, headed by Daniel Dorobantu, and soon it became a pioneering name in the Romanian ambient music scene. After 13 years of studio productions, in 2008 Daniel transformed Thy Veils into an ensemble of performing arts.
The project has since self-produced seven studio albums, four live recordings and numerous singles, a DVD with non-narrative video essays, video art for live performances and video installations, as well as music for film and contemporary dance.
The project’s latest endeavor – the single “Influx” – is described by Thy Veils founder, Daniel Dorobanțu, to be “about us all, because it’s about our collective consciousness – what we all feel, desire, experience, dream, remember and envision.” The single “Influx” will be part of the ambitious, upcoming studio album “Next Forever”, which is a “multidimensional tapestry of stories that projects an imaginary universe, 30 millennia into the future, when each person functions based on nondual consciousness. Envisioning a group flow state at a planetary scale.”
Solely by reading the liner notes to any of the project’s releases, it soon becomes apparent that Thy Veils provide cerebral and emotional listening experiences, which investigate, unfold and dispense many of life’s existentialist philosophies and theories.
However at the foundation of any intellectualized lyrical discourse, lies the propelling music that Thy Veils proposes, and it is thoroughly striking on its own. Such in fact, is the case with the single, “Influx”.
Thy Veils’ sonic palette is especially dense with layer upon layer of cosmic future-funk sounds stacked upon one another and neatly wrapped up in a modern production veneer, evidencing many sonic flourishes along the way.
Mircea Ardeleanu Jr.’s basslines roll, rumble and pop. Daniel Dorobanțu’s synths subtly twist, attack and retract, alongside the drums, which firmly maintain the momentum. On top, Maria Hojda’s mesmeric vocals weave a majestically interlacing path of ear-warming eloquence.
“Heart is like the moon. Bright in the deep green pool. Nothing can compare with it. You tell me how this can be. There is a way I ride. Ocean of stars inside. When the sky’s awake. And the moon shows it’s bright face. Wind and grace and shore. It comes and goes but not through doors,” sings Maria Hojda as she unpacks the articulate narrative penned by Han Shan.
Beautifully mixed and mastered by Attila Lukinich, “Influx” bristles with a blend of colorful sonic vibrancy and atmospheric aural bliss. Thy Veils may just be among the most exciting, intriguing and significant electronic projects of the current decade.
