Serena Sky: “Don’t Forget Me” – hard, crunchy, and catchy as hell!

Serena Sky is a pop/rock duo from Montreal, Canada. They formed as a band back in 2012 when they released their self-titled EP. Back now after three years of writing tunes, they finally released their sophomore EP titled “Don’t Forget Me” which includes the single “Virginia” which has been gaining attention by stations across North America.

I must say that I am really digging this Ep. The songs are all hard, crunchy, and catchy as hell. I could easily see just about every song on “Don’t Forget Me” making it to radio airplay. They are all very radio-friendly. Normally, too much radio-friendliness and catchiness would make me wary. But not here. In addition to the powerful hooks, these songs have a deep groove that grabs me and keeps me listening. So I can’t fault the music, at all. The songs are emotionally touching while giving the listener the sense that they are absolutely perfect the way they are, which is pretty uncanny.

Crank it up, play the entire album through and hear for yourself. The moment the second track, “Virginia”, sets in, you’ll know what I mean about radio-friendliness! It rocks all the way through with a soaring chorus. Funny thing is, it just get better from there on out. The topics are timely and relevant, the sound is 100% what you’d expect from a Canadian rock band. “I Think You’re Letting Go” has great music and mind-blinding lyrics.  It is a beautiful mix of power and emotion, which sets the pace for the rest of the Ep. It sets it so well, that the song crashes straight into “My Beautiful”, another high-energy melodic pop-rocker.

It’s also pretty clear by this time, that in Pat DiMeo, Serena Sky have a top class singer who knows exactly how to treat incendiary rock songs as well as heart-rending ballads like “How To Treat a Man”. The pitch and tonal quality of Pat’s voice at times reminds me of the legendary Bryan Adams – especially on the upbeat rockers “Difference” and “Best Thing.” All-round though this nine-track Ep is mature, sophisticated, and contains some of the most impressive pop-rock songwriting around today. These songs are addicting and there’s something new to the vibe of the music here.

“Don’t Forget Me” has all the catchy hooks that Serena Sky is so absolutely brilliant at without the obvious pandering, and they do it with an indefinable edge. I keep hitting repeat on songs as they wind down – which is always a good sign.  If Pat DiMeo’s voice and guitar doesn’t completely captivate you (highly unlikely), then listen to, Andreas Koliakoudakis’ drumming skills, which are just as impressive. Overall, there’s a really big feel to these songs; you can almost envision Serena Sky lugging from city to city in a fancy bus, just waiting to belt out these pop-rock anthems!

I for one appreciated all the genuine emotion contained on “Don’t Forget Me”, not to mention the outstanding songwriting abilities of Serena Sky. If you like alternative rock, this is a band you really need to get into.
