Jon Clarke is a driven and charismatic performer with a focus on creating tuneful electro-pop melodies with hints of indie rock, echoing in the footsteps of artists as diverse as Richard Ashcroft, The Stone Roses or New Order, just to mention a few. One of Clarke’s favorite creativities is remixing, and the man has remixed a disparate number of artists from Pink Floyd and U2, to David Bowie and The Stone Roses.
Not to mention The Beatles, The Kinks and The Sex Pistols. But the list is endless. “Free Love (the genie remix)”, one of the latest works by Jon Ian Clarke Aka ‘The Genie’, is a potpourri of sounds, rhythms and tempos, all compressed into 2 minutes and 58 seconds.
Its crossover appeal and originality are very good, but the raw energy is the icing on the cake. Kitschy electronica is one of the easiest kinds of music to mess up, especially if there’s sampling going on. Give it a theme, and it’s even harder. But ‘The Genie’ pulls off this incredibly engaging track with rare style and skill, putting together flair with disparate musical styles – pairing off leftfield vocals, sound samples and beats, and it works.
Jon Ian Clarke Aka ‘The Genie’ veers wildly from one style to another, sometimes mingling styles, all in the same track. Rather than sounding messy and fragmented, he creates a densely-constructed head-nodding arrangement. And he knows just how often to repeat a sample, and where to place it, just to keep the beat and rhythm from seeming repetitive.
From the sound of the most gravelly opening, you’ll be tapping your toe, nodding your head, shaking your arms, hands, and body…though you won’t know to which part of the rhythm or the song you’re doing it too. You’re just doing it, because this is some of the most downright noisy, slamming, oddball electronic music you’ll hear in a while.
Seriously though, if you’re looking for something a little different from what’s playing on pop radio; something a little more progressive than even the alternative stations are playing; and something a whole lot more hip than you’re hearing at your favorite club, this track offers the missing link.
Finding this style of music leads one to relive the same sensations had on first discovering music by artists like Moby and Fatboy Slim – unconventional, slightly bizarre, but highly infectious and intelligent!
