Brynn Elyzabeth: “Alibi” – the theory of ‘less is more’ is beautifully applied on the Banks original

In the past year and a half, Brynn Elyzabeth — who’ll drop her first studio EP, “I Sing Because” this upcoming Summer — has vaulted herself from unknown local vocalist to an award-winning singer-songwriter. Her work on 2015’s “Tears In Your Eyes” featuring A.S.H.E.S the CHOSEN climbed to No. 23 on CMJ’s Hip Hop charts and received regular rotation on over 100 college and specialty radio stations.

Dark and brooding, but sweet, here Brynn tackles Bank’s 2014 anthem, “Alibi”, with just a simple piano backing. She takes Bank’s ethereal, strange blending of an exotic melody and world music-style composition, influenced by rock and R&B, and breaks it down into a raw, soulful, organic delivery. This is where the theory of ‘less is more’ is beautifully applied.

Brynn Elyzabeth knows her way around R&B, as well as having jazz inflections, and understanding the art of seduction behind the microphone. She evokes many great singers while having a style of her own.

Brynn sings the song the way it was probably composed: unfiltered and passionate with her heart on her sleeve. And as a result, she has given us a treasure of a version. Better or worse, is a matter of personal taste, but that it’s a quality original interpretation, is a matter of fact.

Brynn’s voice soars beautifully over this slow-burning track while drenched in defiant hopefulness that love will come her way despite the demons inside her. The track has a deep sexy aura which makes the lower half of the body feel sexy things, while the lyrics and soulfulness keep the upper body and mind fully engaged and in touch with the artist and her emotions.

Slightly edgy in sound, this song is a celebration of the search for self-assessment and understanding, and is brilliantly tied together by the voice and interpretation of Brynn Elyzabeth. Such raw power and intensity coupled with the flavor of the acoustic piano, gives it a classic feel, more than lost in the original, with all due respect, of course.

You are looking at a sure-footed songstress, and when you peel back the beauty and creativity, you see an artist, built from of old tradition. An artist to watch come into her own. In the near future we can expect first studio EP “I Sing Because”, which should validate all she has achieved here on “Alibi”.
