If you’re sick of the formula played on pop or alternative radio or think that Pop Divas are great but do not embrace the never-yielding, wholesome feminine spirit, give Reina Mora a try. She’s a challenging artist. Her music veers from whispered passages to upfront soul-baring and confrontational verses. Reina dives straight to the heart of your wildest emotions. But she deserves credit (and a bigger audience) precisely for being honest and compelling on her debut single “Brighter Sky”.
In all of its organic simplicity “Brighter Sky” is one of the most touching, brilliant and utterly emotive songs I have ever heard this year. Driven by an acoustic guitar arrangement the song is punctuated by Latin-styled horns and percussion, which in turn support the deliciously tasteful harmonies.
The track will take you on an intense musical journey and stretch your imagination, leaving you in awe of the complex yet spare sounds and Leeane Melendez’ smooth, but richly intense vocals filled with passionate melodrama will bring you to your knees.
I think the reason listeners will find this song so attractive and accessible is simply because it sounds so mature and sophisticated, and a very long way from being a debut recording. Add to that the fact that the production is tastefully elegant, giving the song and the vocals plenty of room to breathe. The production brings out the space, texture and depth in “Brighter Sky”, and the overall sound is more luxurious and resonant as a result.
The exotic atmosphere is rich, vivid and well captured on this track too. Also, Reina Mora aka Leeane Melendez projected a smoldering seductive attitude that will make people sit up and take notice. Ultimately though, what makes “Brighter Sky” such a masterwork is its simple raw power and simmering passion, the brooding emotional intensity, the pure heart and soul that pours out nakedly from every note of the record.
Leeane Melendez sings this song like her love depended on it and few other modern artists can convey such surefooted emotion on their debut release that I know of.
Reina Mora is the musical brainchild of a singer-songwriter Leeane Melendez from Puerto Rico currently residing in Los Angeles, CA. Her influences are deeply entrenched in her Puerto Rican roots, inspired by Plena, Baladas and Salsa, but she blends that along with timeless music, making sure all instruments are played live. She is currently in the studio completing her EP “Birds Eye View”.
