Sometimes a recording amazes you because you’ve never heard anything like it. But the opposite can also happen; a track blows you away because it seems to draw from lots of music you’ve heard and love, and combines the influences so perfectly it manages to transcend them altogether. Such is the case with Germany-based producer Jim Session’s jaw-dropping single, “Storming”. Jim is hardly alone in terms of genre, but his music really feels like a seminal work that few are going to top anytime soon.
Felix Häge aka Jim Session is working in a crowded field of producers making melodic, electronic blends that incorporate various influences. “Storming” combines cinematic beauty, sleek synth tones, vocal manipulations – and then adds the ingredient of subtle dubstep flavor. This mix, along with a few more years of experience seems to be what’s elevated Jim Session from a mere electronic mortal to a peddler of something very rare.
For much of the song, Jim Session employs a pattern of alternating vocal stabs and string washes. It’s an effective structure, displaying Session’s striking improvement on his penchant for crafting tunes that could accompany an epic film or gorgeously fill a room with a chilled atmospheric sound.
So much electronic music today is enslaved by trends and an attempt at being cool. Jim Session seems like his having way too much fun to even care, the sound is almost celebratory. Nowhere is this adjective more fitting than on “Storming” which sounds like the soundtrack to the day where we all finally travel through space and achieve peace with the universe.
Everything is held together by a very warm and welcoming overall sound and the songs is never overwhelmingly complex; instead, the track has a subtlety that allows you to discover different nuances with each listen. Electronic music looms large in today’s cultural scene, but despite this influx, “Storming” still manages to present a refreshing listening experience – cinematic and dark, it is somehow uplifting too.
“Storming” is a recording that can serve as the soundtrack to a lazy summer afternoon just as easily as it can provide some late-night headphone comfort. It’s this duality that sets it apart from a lot of electronica coming out of late and Jim Session’s star will continue to rise with every release he puts out because of it. With more releases ahead of him over the coming months, it seems like Jim Session will be making a name for himself with his particular sound!
