Levi Moore is an up and coming singer-songwriter and performer, who is based out of Savannah, GA. Levi grew up ranching and training horses, he earned a football scholarship and graduated from Missouri State University with an B.S. in Animal Science, and after graduation worked on a ranch for a year before moved to Arkansas and working in an oilfield for 3 years. Levi packed up and moved to back to Savannah to pursue music full time in December of 2015. Sitting somewhere between the Country, Folk and Americana genres, Levi says of his music: “Rather than drinking songs or party anthems, most of my material tries to address some part of the human condition.”
And “address the human condition”, is precisely what Levi Moore does, in his song, “Who Are We” which takes a stance in the aftermath of the Charlottesville tragedy. An event that ignited violent clashes at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., leaving three dead and more than a dozen injured. The rally, called “Unite the Right,” was initiated by members of white nationalist, Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazi groups to protest the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
Rep. Tom Garrett, a Republican representing the Virginia’s 5th Congressional District said: “It’s beyond my ability to comprehend that in 2017 in a place like Charlottesville, Va., people can’t understand that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was spot-on when he said we should judge one another by the content of our character and not the color of our skin – it is tragic.” Garrett added that 90% of the people from the fascist rally were not even from the state.
Hence Levi’s articulation in “Who Are We” becomes extremely pertinent: “In every man there’s a devil waiting for a tiny crack at the door / Let him see the light of day / You can feed the wolf / What you will / But he is there, and hungry still / Won’t be long, kept at bay.”
If America has been working since 1776 to erase horrible flaws like slavery and second-class citizenship and finds itself in this state of regression in 2017, then once again Levi’s query: “Who are we, when the light shows our flaws / When we answer midnight’s call / and the monster shows its teeth / Who are we when the truth bares it all / and the mighty take a fall / We must ask who….are we?”, defines an alarming condition of social and cultural ambiguity.
Radio often gets chided these days for it’s narrow-minded playlists built around parties, dirt roads and moonlight, but truth be told, for many of the core country audience, that is simply reality. But over the past few months, a shift has begun. An insatiable craving for honest, true to life narratives have bubbled up, and Levi Moore is one of its underground precursors. Levi bares his soul throughout much of “Who Are We”, as he laces together honesty, passion and a sense of moving on into being a propulsive trigger for change.
Levi Moore’s voice is the vehicle through which he focuses his creative lens, backed by his trusted guitar, and with which the singer zaps every ounce of emotion he could possibly muster in only three minutes. In today’s day and age, this singer-songwriter is somewhat of a neo-traditionalist, as he veers away from bro-country excursions and drinking songs, in exchange for meaningful material.
