Tsunami VIII’s (also known as Tsunami) staying power as a solo artist in hip-hop is due to three constants: an exciting instrumental, lyrics that never surprise yet masterfully cater to their audience, and a wholly mysterious persona that listeners will want to consume. Combined with his awareness to not oversaturate the scene with material, Tsunami is poised to make his name as relevant as ever with his latest release, “Juice”. His strength he is his cathartic aggression channeled through the ability to turn everything into a chant.
The track drops any pretense and opens with the clearest mission statement possible: “They say I’m hard to find, but I’ll be where the money at.” From there, it’s business as usual for a natural talent such Tsunami: a dense, booming beat, hooks that mostly consist of a phrase shouted like a salutation, cataloging of various debaucheries and risky escapades.
Another of Tsunami VIII’s great assets is his ability to make his surroundings his own. He slides right into the spacey, trap-noir beat like a veteran player out onto the ballpark. He sticks in vivid one-liners and rattles off these verses, without fearing the triplet flow, all with an ascending and descending cadence that emphasizes just the right syllables.
This is indicative of how effortless all of this rhyming stuff comes to him. He never sounds tired, never phones it in. He sounds like the consummate pro.
A great sound can’t make up for a track lacking in substance or technical acumen, but luckily for Tsunami he has got the whole gamut covered here. While nobody is ever going to accuse him of having heavily conscious bars, the track highlights a strong songwriting craft honed especially for banging anthems.
And while “Juice” is not traditionally “lyrical” in the Kendrick-sense of the word, Tsunami is smart and sharp on his lines and his hooks are ready for chanting. Staying true to a well-evidenced Hedonist nature, he makes sure to pour his pleasures on you like a shaken bottle of bubbly.
Whether his songs are inappropriate or not for you, they’re infectious enough to grab your attention. And “Juice” proves to be no exception to the rule. Moreover it is without flaws, from its production to the performance, the rhymes and lyrical flow. Now there are not many tracks you can say that about!
