The Honest Mistake Band: “Patriotic Rebellion” – inviting, inspiring and daring!

The Honest Mistake Band was founded in 1985 in Daly City, California and had numerous members in the past, but in in 1997, Pete and John decided to do everything themselves. The band who always record in John’s converted Garage/Studio, are proud Americans who love their country, voicing their opinions and views, and at times humor through their music.

The Honest Mistake Band is a band that evolves even as you are listening to their recordings. There is a unity to their 10 track album “Patriotic Rebellion” that is inviting, inspiring and daring in its songwriting. And the album features exactly what the title says, but the best thing about it is how, genre wise, it twists and turns all over the place, while sustaining the same overall mood.

There is a seemingly effortless flow through the diversity of tracks on that can leave you just staring at your walls in awe. These guys switch instruments, switch lead vocal duties and switch sounds, yet somehow maintain the overall mood of the album. They sing, and they use the spoken word, all over crunchy guitar infested rock jams.

Another admirable thing about this work is that The Honest Mistake Band do what they want, they stretch out and explore. The result is eclectic, left-field songs like “A Creepy Man”, “We Got Something To Say”, “My Favorite Fuhrer” or “Marxist Messiah”.

honest-mistake-drumsThe album can seem, at first, strange and esoteric but after you give it the mandatory 5 listens, it slowly changes its complexion. You’ll find deadly alternative rockers like, “Everything Is Bad For You”, my absolute favorite “I Told You So”, “Monday Morning Blues” and “Liar ‘n Chief”.

The album comes across as an incredible culmination of concise yet extensive jams in which the duo recorded improvised style. Like they entered the recording studio with nothing on paper and came out with a cosmic political bible.  The duo’s gleefully skewed, wildly imaginative music and singing flurries onto the listener like a million multicolored confettis.

It manages to be simultaneously structured and open-ended, tightly composed and spontaneously volatile, frantically experimental and glowingly emotional, delivered with typical smile-and-wink humor and disarming sincerity. Their songs establish the situation, as well as the resolution.

And what each track has in common should be obvious after a couple of listens: creatively-intelligent writing, great levels of musical skill, excellent arrangement of the gritty raw instrumentals and the somewhat offbeat voices, and probably the most important ingredient in their music – unpredictability!

So, make the same mistake I made and accidentally pick The Honest Mistake Band up next time. You will definitely not regret the blunder.
