Dima Kash is an award winning Russian born rapper, songwriter, artist, and studio owner who immigrated to the United States at an early age. Fluent in both English and Russian, Dima grew up with old fashioned Russian parents and because of this, had to learn how to earn everything on his own right from the start. This has turned him into an ambitious and committed individual who will not stop working until his dreams have been achieved.
This has obviously been the week of deep thinking and caring, as I’ve been presented with a multitude of conscious songs that affront the theme of police brutality and the abuse of power by one man on another…especially if that, ‘another’, is a black man.
The recent escalade in shooting and killing in the USA, between uniformed men and civilians, certify the fact that the system is not working, no matter what the color of your skin. Dima Kash’s track ‘Open Your Eyes’ ft. Monaye Love is yet another testimony to how very far we’ve moved away from Luther King’s ‘Dream’ since August 28, 1963. And that’s a shame considering that in 53 years, all our generation of highly technological people could achieve, culturally…is regression!
The beauty of music as a historical source is that it serves as raw primary material that reveals to listeners the ethos of a particular group at a particular moment. And Dima Kash steps right inside that equation with ‘Open Your Eyes’. His flow and his verses force us to confront reality and deconstruct the myth that was the American or Luther King’s dream.
Musically, the song is both a homage to old school hip-hop, and to the vanguard of modern production. We can only hope that small independent efforts like this song, lead to action and improvement.
Because of this urgency, and Dima Kash’s powerful social message – along with his musical brilliance, and an ability to communicate that message – perhaps ‘Open Your Eyes’ needs to be required listening for the masses.
