Yung Chad is a 24 year old up and coming hip hop artist out of Houston, TX. He was raised in Mississippi and started writing music when he was 13, being influenced by rappers like T.I., Lil Wayne, and Young Jeezy, among others. A fan of West Coast hip-hop, once Yung Chad moved to Houston at 15, he started getting into the Houston rap scene as well.
It is truly hard to find good street music these days that isn’t just a boppy trap beat and someone mentally special spitting into the mic. “Lights” by Yung Chad has a perfect amount of snappy verses and an excellently chosen beat. It’s impressive how Yung Chad can stay true to his roots without even being a veteran in the game yet.
What’s so admirable about Yung Chad is that when he raps, he never seems like he is trying to impress anybody. With his voice, commentary, and wicked on-and-off again flow, you can feel him and believe him. Once you hear the adlib intro to the song you know that it means fire.
As far as production value goes, “Lights” is top-notch and polished effort that works well with the Yung Chad style. The laid-back piano vibe with the snarling snare drum, melds perfectly with Chad’s reflections of the city lifestyle. Gritty, soulful, intense, intelligent, and beautiful, from start to finish this track will make anyone think twice about not including Yung Chad into their favorite playlist.
Yung Chad ranks high on my 2016 list of favorite rappers; he definitely holds his own and does have a commanding mic presence, together with the fact that that he is not limited by the region from which he hails, he branches out and drops dope, well-rounded tracks of various sounds and atmospheres.
He uses his talent to create picture-perfect sceneries inside his lyrics and every now and then opens up a part of his personality that few in the hip-hop genre bother to do anymore. Overall, “Lights” is a very solid track that should be in the mix of any self-respecting hip hop fan.
