Born and raised in the South Bronx, and now based in the North side of Atlanta, D.Will$ definitely has the skills to hang with some of the best rappers of today. His mixtape “Trap Olympics” keeps a consistent tone and attitude throughout as we are exposed to his blunted reality. The production of each track, which is done by diverse producers, perfectly fits his style, and while not being totally groundbreaking, each is nevertheless hypnotic and addictive. If like me, you don’t know D.Will$ this is a great way to get introduced.
If you like rap and Hip-hop you will love this album. If you don’t like rap and hip-hop you will like this album. “Trap Olympics” is like fresh air on the hip hop scene and it would appear D.Will$ is clearly aware of this. The mixtape is smart, and eclectic. D.Will$ not only steps over anyone on the scene right now he also lets them know their time is up. Rap music has been suffering for years because the only way to be a rapper is to be the caricature of what a rapper has to be. They’ve been doing that for 15 years. And while everybody is so busy trying to “act” like they’re a rapper by being overly bombastic and in your face about how they only roll with gangs and sleep with their millions, D.Will$’ intelligence is going through the roof because he does it all effortlessly.
D.Will$ is the definition of skill. His thoughts may seem random but all come together perfectly to make sense. Sometimes you wonder what in the world he’s talking about but then he manages to tie a line to a previous line and often times it takes multiple listens to notice the little nuances and connections he seems to make on every song. This alone gives this mixtape great replay value. On “Trap Olympics” D.Will$ is clearly in a good zone as this album takes on its own sound and identity. From the unique artwork to the earthy green and gold color, it’s clear that care was put into this mixtape, both on the inside and on the outside. This dude has a certain swag and delivery that is if nothing else, refreshing.
I listened to the mixtape completely without a skip. A double treat when you have to decide to listen to either the bars or the beats, both are equally entertaining. The intro leads into “Walls of Jericho” which is where the mixtape kicks into high gear, and carries on with “RKO”. “Frog Splash Ft. Juvie Escobar” signals the switch to overdrive, and is kept there with “Ankle Lock” and “Stunner”. “SweeChin Music” and “The People’s Elbow” rides out on simple cruise control, as by this time D.Will$’ rhyming has totally gained momentum. “Trap Olympics” is a mixtape worthy of purchase with D.Will$ polishing his style and flow to perfection. The mixtape is one smoked out ride with just enough bump and complexity to keep you coming back for more.
