Monkey Bars & Soetter: “Spin Me Round” employes a minimalist approach, with compressed percussion that works!

Monkey Bars is a Korean American Music Record Production Team composed of producers James Keys and Chase Bars. The two released their debut mini album, “As You Can See” on March 20th, which features 5 songs venturing through different styles of genres. The group collaborated with EDM producer, Seotter, for their newest single, “Spin Me Round”, which is an electronic song that includes elements of house music. Monkey Bars states that: “we strive not for our personal accomplishments, but for the promotion of Asian American Music.”

Monkey Bars prove with this track that they definitely 100% of their lives expressing themselves through music. Personally, I was pretty convinced that the best electronic and dance music could only come from the German or Dutch producers but that was until I noticed how this Korean-American team describes to the world what their brand of electronic music sounds like.

monkeybars-logoMonkey Bars have definitely employed a minimalist approach, with compressed percussion, to this production. Like the music of the early 20th century, in the time of expressionism, atonalism and aleotoric music. On the surface, Monkey Bars furnish a new sound. The shear simplicity and yet the ingenuity of the track is staggering.

It begins with a clichéd keyboard sample, developing a melodic ambience, then slowly and subtly a synth-string flows in. It is no longer just a pad that increases in volume. Instead it seems to be alive, with a mind of its own. It builds slowly and intelligently toward the climax. At first the synth develops into beautiful chords, then delves into melodic euphoria. The melody is comparatively simple, yet the interplay with the sound allows it to billow into ecstasy. The background sfx reminds of cartoon sounds which add to the almost teasing, playful mood of the song. However the mood is far more powerful and unique than appears on the surface, with just a trace of melancholy and the flash of a distressed female voice.

It’s one of those songs where different people can get different ideas for what the song is really about; even I’m not sure, but does it really matter? Isn’t it just simple EDM…or is it?
