Zack Phillips & Alex Alpert are a songwriting duo based in Los Angeles, called The Dons. They both sing lead vocals, and excel at harmonies while accompanying their compositions with either guitar, the piano, or more frequently, both instruments. You can’t help but be drawn into their music. It is so uplifting and inspiring.
The duo uses no frills and gloss, as their songs are recorded live with a simple mic or mics, setup in the middle of the room. I can already guess how perfect they’re going to be sounding by the time they get to a professional recording studio.
The Dons are currently releasing the off the cuff recordings via YouTube and Facebook using the video format. The videos are terrifically candid and natural, but when you get right down to it – these releases are always about the music.
One of their latest songs, “Gimme More” is an extraordinary blend of upbeat piano and acoustic-guitar rhythms, soulful singing and ear-catching harmony, providing fans of this clean-cut sound a compelling reason to discover its many virtues.
If you care about music at all, or how it is created or inspired, or recorded, you will be entranced by the simple pleasures, The Dons music and videos communicate.
We’re so stuck in the copy and paste era, where ninety-nine percent of music is conceived and constructed on a laptop, that when we see two young men casually playing instruments and singing at the top of their lungs – minus Autotune and computer-aided trickery – it is almost awe-inspiring.
With an impressively gorgeous melody and uplifting vocals, “Gimme More” rises to a joyous level of greatness while simply and gently touching one’s sensitive chords, captivating the spirit and the imagination. Magic, may be the operative word, with which to sum up the impact the combination of these two talents have.
Some singer-songwriters just have an intrinsic or schooled knowledge of music. It shows in their craft, even in the most spontaneous or even awkward moments. Zack Phillips & Alex Alpert are two who belong in that category. Listen to the good stuff on their YouTube Channel or Facebook page, and be elevated by the unpretentious, but inspired talents of The Dons.
