Oxaï Roura is an artist that has meant more and more to me as his eclectic releases come in, his heavenly sonic tapestries have woven themselves into the very core of my being and this new release has once again left me speechless. What a delight it is to see Roura in a collaboration effort with Steve Osborne on the track “Defying Gravity (Experior)”. This man cannot be stopped and was clearly sent here solely to guide us into our higher selves and bless us with his soundscapes. For those few who still not heard of him, Oxaï Roura is a composer of unusual musical forms besides being a percussionist, a vocalist and a researcher in Ethnomusicology. His unique music could be described as an original blend of strange futuristic-electronic sounds, ancient mystical voices and spiritual percussion from different parts of the world.
His latest collaborative track “Defying Gravity (Experior)”, sounds like it comes from anywhere but from some part of the world. More likely, it comes from another world, or the other world, if you like. Here Roura, along with Steve Osborne naturally, is at his highest tier and shows his mastery at building mystifying atmosphere… a world you can live inside and experience in many ways.
From the thought provoking spoken word mantra Roura weaves throughout this track to the bass rumbling around you, this will leave a mark on your life as all his music has for me personally. If you’re looking for some answers inside yourself or to let ghosts of the past, present and future rest easy, then plug this world into your ears and let it take you to places you never dreamt were real.
Amazing is the concept of unlimited space, the idea of an Alien encounter somewhere where there is no physical boundary that marks the edge of our universe and the beginning of another. Brilliant is a being that can capture and understand such a marvelous concept on so many levels and express it by means of sound, specifically in musical form.
Oxaï Roura is one such artist. Over the last few months it has become obvious that his musical capacity knows no bounds. The musician has released various recordings, all brief and concise, each one ranging somewhere between generally solid and utterly flawless.
In a more literal sense, Oxaï Roura’s music perfectly captures the essence of otherworldliness, and all of its wondrous aspects, portraying them through unusual melodies and mysterious ambiance and rhythms. When it comes to fulfilling such a task, however, few other musicians that I know of has ever done or very likely ever will do what Roura does with these elements.
His mindset ids far removed from conventional western musical structures. Hence it was a surprise to hear “Defying Gravity (Experior)”, which is probably the most accessible two minutes of music Roura’s has made to my knowledge. And I suspect Steve Osborne may have something to do with this more grounded sound.
Yet within this conventional framework, Roura is still capable of taking you on a journey. The track will find you coming closer to a true understanding of his music and its lack of limits, countless undiscovered textures, and imponderable sounds and rhythms.
“Defying Gravity (Experior)” is the soundtrack to a dream that has yet to take place. It is a piece of music you should keep accessible at all times in case of a desperate need to question the existence of the universe, the impulsive desire to stargaze, or even just for the pleasurable purposes of listening to a musician who continuously challenges himself beyond the expected.
