It’s pretty hard to believe that rapper Recklous only dropped his first professionally produced track at the beginning of 2017. Over the years leading up to now, Santa Cruz’s very own lyrical wonder has balanced three personas: The reserved, well-mannered kid, an uplifting positive artist full of ambition and wisdom and an emcee whose love for hard hitting Hip Hop and lightening quick raps defines his sound. Slowly the first began to fade, leaving the remaining two in clear vision. Finally Recklous’ latest studio project is on its way, with a brand new single giving fans a clear picture of his creative vision.
Filled with fast-paced rhymes, a heavy dose of personal scrutiny and a dash of harsh reality, the plainly titled “Friends and Fam” further cements Recklous’ role as one of the fastest improving newcomers onto the scene. Something he already proved on his previous outing with the single, “Blackout”, produced by (Prod. Aq1notx).
As a single, “Friends and Fam” is somewhat representative of everyone who plays a role in Recklous‘ life. Throughout the story Recklous expresses true positivity and self-empowerment. And if his intention is to motivate himself and listeners to never give up on their dreams, while not forgetting about the people close to them, his doing a great job here.
This track has a super chill bass-driven vibe to it, and Recklous spits some unbelievable lyrics filled with honesty and truth about the harsh reality of being on your grind, throughout the song.
Recklous has mastered the art of rapping fast over inspirational-sounding beats, but not to disguise the fact that he is spewing surface-level shit like some of his peers. His abundance of lyrical substance is easily apparent, as he succeeds in sparking some strong emotion through his energetic rapping.
Recklous is clearly not the same person and artist he was before this single. He’s better. This track is a personal one for Recklous as it’s about his reflection of the current stage he’s at in his life and seeing how far he’s come. He successfully finds the balance between brilliantly executed composition and complex lyricism on “Friends and Fam”.
Recklous does have huge potential and the body of work that truly sets him free from underdog territory, cannot be too far away. “Friends and Fam” deserves attention regardless though, as it is a track that diverts substantially from the repetitive and formulaic music that is all too frequent today. This track could provide a taste for what is yet to come from Recklous, and there is absolutely no doubt that his career is moving in the right direction.
