J Mike and Star_i are independent artists under the Embrace Freedom banner, who love all music but specialize in the rap/hip hop genre. Something of an anomaly, Embrace Freedom music is unconventional and sometimes weird but they consider that to be a strength. Their latest single, “I Bleed Therefore I Am” (Prod. by Omari Mc), is simply awesome. Both rappers have distinct styles, and they are supported by one great beat bang and have written deep lyrics.
If this was a CD back in the day, it would be the type of CD you wouldn’t want to lend out because you might never get it back. So luckily it’s just a single! The lyrics throughout are everyday words from the streets put to music. Words that real people can relate to – ‘misery, poverty, and insanity’ – the things that drive or destroy lives.
The authentically aggravating factor is that J Mike and Star_i actually sound like they’ve been through it. There is no faked-up studio street life depicted on this track, but only the real thing.
I listened to this track and thought back. I thought back to a time when music belonged to the east coast and a time where the overflow of garbage, unlike today, would have smashed before it darkened the doorway at hip hop’s house. “I Bleed Therefore I Am” (Prod. by Omari Mc) reminds me of that time, when only the good stuff made it through to my ears.
This underground masterpiece upholds the tradition of rap set forth by the legends of our time, and if it were imaginable, without disrespecting anybody, J Mike and Star_i and an extra dimension, with their tongue-twisting, high energy, almost over the edge raps.
These cats are on top of their game. Their no nonsense style of writing and way of telling a story is put down with ease and emotion, notwithstanding the adrenaline pumping rhymes and flows that will have you gasping for air. It’s dynamic and special, and comes from the heart and the mind.
Not since the early nineties, during the “golden age” of hip-hip has someone produced truly classic, meaningful, aggressively survival-essential hip hop tracks like “I Bleed Therefore I Am” (Prod. by Omari Mc). J Mike and Star_i are far removed from the mainstream, radio or commercial hip-hop doing the rounds. But they’re not far behind mainstream, or to far the left, or far to the right of mainstream. No sir, they’re so damn far ahead!
