New Jersey’s Cloudvibes is a rapper/singer whose love for music began at the tender age of 8 when he was fond of miming to some of his music idols, ranging from 2pac to Notorious B.I.G to Nas to Jay Z and Akon to name a few. Cloudvibes started his own music career at the tender age of 15, recording different genres of music.
“Open Mic Sessions”, the new mixtape by Cloudvibes knows exactly what it is — a conduit for the artist to articulate his rawest feelings, whether they are materialistic, altruistic, romantic, or egotistic, and it peruses motifs both cliché and novel in an unapologetic way in order to convey his most profound expressions of self with the same intensity and passion with which he originally felt them.
Each song here emotes in a way that is either accessible or familiar and does so beautifully, making it a stunning emotional success.
“Open Mic Sessions” peels back layers of emotional context, narrowing in on what truly makes his raps so compelling: the duality and sincerity of his character. On the one hand, Cloudvibes is a street rapper, a trapster, on the other he is superbly expressive, finding the range to stray between relentlessly bristling jams and gut-wrenching bass themes.
That said, the most transfixing moments of the mixtape improve or subvert that formula. It was hard to choose which songs were my favorite, so instead I listed my Top5 songs with no specific order: “Presidential, Free Slaves”, “Good Place”, “Checkmate Music Crew”, and “Thoughts Of A Genius”.
His verses are fire and the production seems to be right on cue. Rarely is such a level of output matched by a corresponding level of quality, but for the most part that is just what Cloudvibes been able to accomplish. Each song stands out as its own distinct work, while also fitting in seamlessly to the greater narrative that is “Open Mic Sessions.”
Cloudvibes seeks to further cement his own lane within the rap game on this mixtape. His signature style has been perfected and sounds better than ever. His confidence seems as if it has reached a new peak as well, and is in his comfort zone for the vast majority of the mixtape.
The ease at which he progresses through his songs is evident. Like all skilled artists, he can find interesting ways to say the same things. Cloudvibes’ song-making ability is undeniable, and the high energy present throughout the mixtape never tapers off. Cloudvibes has deservedly received plaudits for pushing an original sound, and he’s becoming better with each release.
