Formed in 2012, The Phantoms are Colin Simpson (Vocals and Rhythm Guitar), Colin McKillop (Lead Guitar), Zach Tarimo Goodhur (Bass Guitar) and Blair Cullen (Drums). They have just released their brand new single “Lost” which is the follow-up to the critically acclaimed track, “Wasting Time”.
Amidst all the regurgitated, formulaic and franchised crap in the music industry nowadays it is a joy to find rare gems. The Phantoms is one of those rare gems and this new track is fantastic. It has energy, beauty, heart, soul and spirit. The vocals are outstanding as well as the instrumentation; the songwriting is excellent as well.
These musicians have released another recording that sounds mature, original, and sure-footed. It is clearly the product of a band that will be filling concert venues and playlists for years to come. Colin Simpson is a vocal force to be reckoned with. He is angular timbered voice has a wide and effortless range. He has an uncanny ability to blend energetic rock and legato vocals. His is one of those kinds of voices that helps The Phantoms achieve a distinct sound.
Together with lead guitarist Colin McKillop – whose work is crisp and sharp, with an edgy sound, which definitely sets him apart – they form the cornerstone of The Phantoms indie rock uniqueness. But once the song starts, it becomes clear that the entire band contribute to it is musically adventuresome, wonderfully textured, and sonically innovative sound.
Being a dinosaur of sorts, I am naturally resistant and extremely critical of most modern rock music. But honestly, I have not heard a lot of rock music that meets up to the artistry and craft of those released way back when. The Phantoms is one of those rare bands that have burst through the radar to land into my very selective music collection.
They are an easy listen. There is a warm feeling behind their songs and a sense of melody and charm that blends in with their indie edge, which is rarely seen in other bands in this era of ring-tone-ready music production. There are some similarities between this band and Oasis, but The Phantoms seem to have a bolder approach to their Brit sound.
“Lost” is imperious, reflective, mystical and primal in its execution. Actually, this is a really fine song, with a propulsive rhythm, great washes of glorious thundering guitars, and a terrific melody aided by soaring choruses. Without a doubt, for me, “Lost” is one of the band’s most audaciously brilliant moments thus far!
