Tommy Homonym is a late-blooming artist, following the leads of Susan Boyle, Clementine Hunter and Grandma Moses. Tommy specializes in both original songs and inventive covers of pop and rock tunes, which he arranges and produces in collaboration with trusted friends who are real, as opposed to late-blooming, musicians.
The reclusive Tommy records his music in an attic in New Jersey, and also claims to inhabit the “milder, more fashionable” end of the Asperger’s continuum. “I want to be like Temple Grandin, but with songs instead of cows,” he says. Does this mean he wants to slaughter them mercifully? “No, it means I want to lead them into heaven so they never know what hit them,” he says.
Tommy’s debut album, Uglier Than You, was released October 1, 2013 on iTunes and Amazon. Uglier Than You features nine original songs, along with ”What’s There to Eat?”, the opening tune, written by Austin singer-songwriter Christine Cochran. The video for “Irresistible,” created by filmmaker George Wada, is an official selection of the Dallas VideoFest for 2013. Tommy’s second single, “Heavy Rotation,” is also available and will be his next video.
Tommy’s unabashed vocal sincerity and musical romanticism, while not always hip, is always been “in”. As hip-hop, new wave, grunge, and every other here-today-gone-tomorrow style passes by, the one constant is the romantic ballad. Tommy knows it and never strays far from it, apart from a very rare up-tempo track like “A Taste Of Your Flavor”.

In an age where most people place more importance on the beat of a song than the song itself, Tommy comes along to remind us what great songwriting is really all about. Of course, he will get criticism from those with different musical tastes, but the appreciation of those who enjoy his easy-listening style will provide him with more than adequate compensation.
Uglier Than You is absolutely seamless from start to finish and crammed with delicious melodies and clever lyrics. If you love the music of the seventies and great singer/songwriters like James Taylor, Kenny Loggins, Art Garfunkel etc., you’ll love this album. Tommy has a very distinctive voice that soothes the soul.
If you like a good mellow song with a great lyric, then get this album. It really seems that he put an awful lot of heart into this. It’s not just songs it’s part of the artist you’re hearing. Just surrender to Tommy’s juicy, tangy and spicy melodies and allow yourself to be gifted with his unique ministrations of passion and pain, all dished up in a selection to savor with a glass of red wine and your glad and broken heart.
Tommy Homonym doesn’t sell us music. He hypnotizes us, as he tunes us in to the very songs our own hearts and minds would sing all day long if we could. He and his collaborators in song are nothing short of impeccable on this album.
Songs to drool over? “Irresistible”, “Heavy Rotation”, “Hold Me To It” and “Undone” above all. The sounds on Uglier Than You are melodic and keep you longing for more. Enjoy!
