After their often licentious pop-parody project, The College Man, in the early 00’s, Nick Pacitti and John Percival embark on a new project with hopes to bring a “fresh” sound to listeners. The Social Cynic is focuses on taking stabs at pop-culture, government and world issues.
The Social Cynic takes listeners through an eclectic mix of funk, pop, hard rock and heavy metal. Pacitti has a developed a knack for writing extremely catchy hooks. Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist on guitar, bass and keys, he is able to create cleverly layered and well-timed instrumentation.
Percival, the percussionist and audio technician extraordinaire, aims to give The Social Cynic his unique sound. Whether it’s the melodic undertones of the song, “Informant” or the hard rocking sounds of “Hollywood USA”, using just a Roland TD9KX-2, a Mac and Logic, Percival always has something up his sleeve to keep the listener wanting more.
The Social Cynic stands firmly on its own and gets full stars for their originality, intensity, and sincerity. Unlike thoughtless puppet bands, their roaring yet growing whisper of a mix between pop, funk and alternative rock, is something genuine and fresh to look forward to. With honest intimate tracks like “The Hard Truth,” “Hollywood USA,” “IT”, “The One,” “Informant,” “Cold Blood,” and “Little Princess”, the collection of songs which we will refer to as the Stay Cynical collection comes out to be well-rounded both lyrically and musically.

Though it is clear that The Social Cynic is still exploring and introducing new themes to their eclectic style; even through the use of technology like the ‘Roland TD9KX-2, a Mac and Logic’ they still manage to not sound studio-produced, which adds to the quality of their music, as they never diminish or shadow, but capture the raw energy that sustains their almost ‘live’ sound.
The Social Cynic shows that they have an intense imagination and real feeling with every single song, as each track presents a different musical experience, making the entire collection a worthy download. In my opinion this is a good example of a balanced collection of songs. You have your heavy stuff, you’ve got the hard-melodic, and then you’ve got a few slow-tempo songs sprinkled in for good measure. I like the hard-melodic songs like “Hollywood USA” the best, but you can’t pin this duo down to one type of song, and one listen to the Stay Cynical collection is sure to prove that.
The thing about Pacitti and Percival, is that they never overdo anything. They provide the bare essentials, with just the right amount of bells and whistles, so that at the end, you are only left with the goodness that you need, and no other unnecessary garbage, whether they’re playing heavy or acoustic.
They have a sound and approach all of their own. It’s electric, its acoustic, its heavy, hard, melodic, funky, slow and groovy!
