Set Soundz – “Set La Familia” – impenetrably ill lyricism over some beautifully lush production!

Set Soundz is an entertainment group based in New Providence, Bahamas. It is designed around the belief that, “Your passion should be more than a dream – it should be an opportunity!” The main focus or goal of this company is to introduce the world at large, to some of the brightest and best talents. “Set La Familia” is the newest release by Set Soundz: An in-house collaboration featuring Shas, Ton, Real, GQ, Dread, Blitz King, K. Alexander, Siani GD, Kenique, Dru Bones and N. Wilds.

The sheer number of well-utilized collaborating spots and downright catchy choruses, across a melting pot of Hip Hop, Reggae, RnB, and Junkanoo, expands mainstream rap’s limited new-school paradigms in ways that are desperately needed. At a time when teenage dullards get props for being skilled emcees, any rhyme group that is more interested in pushing envelopes than licking them deserves your attention.

Set-Soundz-tracklistSet La Familia” has been percolating in my player for a few days now and it’s still as fresh as the first day I listened to it. It is one of the few almost perfect hip-hop albums, free of filler, featuring brilliant production and lyrics; it’s just a wonder to listen to.   I also have to give a special mention to the spoken interludes between songs which are not given their own track on the album. They are like little nuggets of song ideas that add hugely to the completeness of this album.

Set Soundz’ impenetrably ill lyricism over some beautifully lush production is something that you would call legendary, unique, and dare I say – untouchable. Set Soundz definitely possesses a gift that may have you questioning the talents of your favorite emcee. They have endless capabilities as far as their impressive jaw gymnastics are concerned. Their rhymes are jam-packed with metaphors, varying tones and rhythms, impeccable precision, and of course lightning quick speed. You’ll obviously have to get used to the explicit language dished out around some of the tracks, but it’s almost the norm in Rap music now.

Overall, this album is as close to perfect as you will hear from the thriving underground hip-hop and urban scene. You will most likely be impressed with standouts like “Feel No Weight”, “Nine Pounds”, “Body Pill Hustle”, “Let’s Get High”, “South Bound”, “Hold On To You” and “Shoot ‘Em Up”. Although I must admit, a few of these songs border on R&B, and several include choruses. Those are usually two things I try to avoid when considering underground hip-hop. But after listening to this album many times, I can honestly say there is nothing bad about those songs. They are executed beautifully, and for its style and effect, it exceeds expectations and succeeds admirably. It’s a formula that very few have been able to execute properly, and Set Soundz makes it seem like child’s play. “Set La Familia” is a recording that amazes and reveals more beauty with each and every spin. All-round, this album is an amazing crossover sonic journey that is inspiring and just makes you feel good. Definitely a keeper!
