Regal State is the project of 20 year old British guitarist, producer and vocalist. Primarily based in London and Leamington Spa, he is a second year student at the University of Warwick, studying Engineering. Regal State has played guitar for over 10 years as well as experimenting with a few other instruments over time. He is a fan of melodic and progressive house, melodic indie pop/rock, blues, jazz and trap/hiphop, and draws inspirations from people such as Wes Montgomery and Carlos Santana.
First off, the musicality of Regal State’s brand new single “Free Will” is absolutely incredible. Secondly it is far removed from the sound of his previous album; “Bank Of Circumstance” which was an Indie-Rock album centered around the sound of Regal State’s jangly guitar bravado. “Free Will” is focused on its layered sound structure, the melody and the sublime vocals. Not that the guitars aren’t there anymore, they are, but they’re blended into the bigger sonic picture of keyboards and string soundscapes.
There are a lot of reasons why I love this recording. Every single second of the song is absolutely enthralling, but a soft and gentle way. This time around it’s more pop than rock for Regal State and it works rather wonderfully. He finds a way to express deep thoughts simply yet so elegantly, and he’s at the top of his game here. The lyrics are brilliantly poignant and many of the phrases and words he uses have a particularly powerful emotional impact.
“Free Will” is wonderful musically as well. The song has a melody that is immediately infectious and catchy, but also complex enough to keep you engaged no matter how many times you listen to it. I discover brilliant melodic flourishes each time I listen to this track, and I can’t help but marvel at the subtlety and intelligence of the songwriting Regal State puts on display here. However, I think what really speaks for the universal brilliance of “Free Will” is that no matter what a person’s age, background, or normal musical tastes are, chances are they will love this track!
