Anyone who went through the 70’s in a haze, can rejoice because the music that carried you through is back again, courtesy of Post Trauma, the country rock band from Fullerton,CA. Billy Ulrich (vocals, guitars, harmonica), Kenny Ulrich (keyboards), Joey Gnoffo (drums) and Sean Boddy (bass, guitars), just like long lost friends spotted from across the room, will take you back to the sound of some of the songs that you fell in love with during the 70’s and 80’s.
Billy Ulrich recorded the album “Sleepless”, in the recording studio which he had built in a small house he moved into during 2011. Without any formal sound engineer training, Billy dedicated over a year and sacrificed every spare moment and spare cent, in fulfilling a dream of turning his music into an album. He recorded 25 full-length songs, representing pivotal or routine events in his life.
There is a purity and honesty in this music that could easily have been lost in a big commercial studio. Post Trauma could have followed a mainstream path, but rather stayed close to their roots and influences, allowing it to all come together here: the harmonies, the songs and the lyrics provide one of the best country rock albums, I’ve heard in a while.
The secret of Post Trauma’s music is that it makes you feel really good. I can’t think of a single unit of musicians who produces indie country-rock music, that can make you feel better. If you like depth, retrospect, sophisticated music making and just plain fun, then “Sleepless” is for you. So get ready to run the gamut of emotions on this one.

It’s a great mix of country rock, bluegrass and straight rock. What is special is the shear quality of their musicianship and arrangements – take “I Get High” and “End In Friend” the latter with it’s superb instrumental interludes. But there’s also the humor of “Get Up In The AM,” made into a witty video too, or the singalong “Ain’t Much” and the nostalgic lament of “The Road.”
At times you’ll feel like clapping, at times you’ll be stomping and at times you’ll even be crying. But, you’ll enjoy every second of every song if you can dig a dash of bluegrass, a dash of country-rock and even a pinch of Southern gospel. As the old saying goes, “They don’t make ’em like this anymore”.
This music is happy, sad, buoyant, contemplative and so easy to listen to. I guess the real beauty of the album is it’s simplicity. Nothing complicated or hidden within it’s lyrics and meanings. Just simple, pure, out-on-the-porch performances. Nice easy going tunes to help you chill out and change your attitude!
Quite simply, “Sleepless” is a rainbow of sounds and emotions that carry you through, every time you hear it.
