Jason Kerrison is an Invercargill born, Christchurch raised, singer-songwriter, producer and entrepreneur. Jason has spent many years at the top of the New Zealand Music Scene with his band OPSHOP, enjoying not only commercial success, but also picking up numerous NZ Music Awards and the prestigious APRA Silver Scroll Award along the way. In 2011, Jason was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, for Services to Music.
Following the success of Opshop, Jason went on to form The Babysitters Circus with some like-minded friends. Now in 2014 the Jason Kerrison’s solo 6-track EP will be produced for imminent release. Whilst he’s come from a rock band background he’s also produced several hip-hop records which has set him on a hybrid path, as he is moving towards what he calls eclectic stomp pop with acoustic framing and digital renderings.
“Never Leave Me Again” is Multi-platinum, awarding winning, Jason Kerrison’s first track as a Solo Artist. The track is just the right mix of alt-country, soft rock and urban pop sensibility. You will find a consistent sound with a near perfect blend of acoustic, electric and steel guitars, backing up Jason’s seriously emotive voice.
Throughout “Never Leave Me Again”, Jason seems to be in a comfort zone that makes the record feel complete, like his vision has been met. Pensive, perceptive, intelligent, honest and emotive, are the first words that come to mind when listening to Jason sing.
The up-tempo, driven, but smooth feel of the song works well for Jason to paint his lyrical pictures upon. He gives the impression he isn’t trying too hard to make us love him, and it works well. Coming in at just under 3 minutes, Jason also knows the value of keeping Pop songs short, instead of stretching them too thin. Another mark of star quality!
What’s also remarkable about the veracious sound of “Never Leave Me Again”, is that Jason Kerrison seems to not only to have performed this music, but he has inhaled it in spirit and substance.
Up until today, I was completely ignorant of anything Jason Kerrison had done before. So I came to this track, free from anything other than a desire to not waste my time. I wasn’t disappointed. The music is absolutely beautiful, the lyrics are well-written, and the song hasn’t left my speakers in several days. That’s rare for me!
