Currently Matt Heart has a new Pop-R&B single out, I’m In Love (feat. Jhuryll Phoenix). In recent years, the quality control, thought and effort the majority of independent artists in the music world have been putting into their recordings has significantly improved. A lot of them no longer seem to feel inhibited by perceived tastes. They have begun to breathe the fresh air that lingers from the thrill of creative innovation; that hunger to persuade the listener to open their hearts and stretch their minds with what they are listening to.
It was that special quality that defined the very artistry of examples like Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Prince and Stevie Wonder. These artists transcend genres and concentrate on what musical combinations best suited their material. Therefore it’s fitting that Matt Heart is finally thrusting that point right back home with his latest single.
The key to appreciating Heart’s music is throwing away pre-conceived notions about what defines Pop, Hiphop, Neo-Soul or R&B and take each track for what it is. Each consecutive song throughout his career is proof of his personal growth and his journey through music. I’m In Love (feat. Jhuryll Phoenix) is just another stop along that journey. On it Matt does not disappoint musically or vocally.
The soulful production, instantly takes the listener back to a time, before over processed mixes squeezed the artist into nothingness. The spaciousness of the arrangement, added to the quality of Matt’s vocal performance and songwriting, that feels almost spiritual, is a great combination for a timeless piece of work, topped off with Jhuryll Phoenix’s performance.
