Hailing from Oakland, California, Jason Daryush delivers a winning compromise between a smooth and catchy pop sound and an honest, organic, direct folk attitude. Along with Brit pop influences Jason has a fondness for immediate and direct melodies. The bright, yet warm and embracing sound of the acoustic guitar is definitely “the skin and bones” of Jason’s music, along with a tight rhythm section and a personal, heartfelt vocal approach.
Poetry, beauty, authenticity, sincerity…usually make an absolutely flawless record. This is what Jason Daryush has achieved on his mini-Ep “Three Cities”. This is stripped down pure emotion; the vulnerability he transmits should hit a chord with anyone who has ever felt a human emotion. The 3-song Ep is perfect for almost every setting, be it relaxing in the evening after wok, driving down the highway, hanging out on a gorgeous sunny day, or curled up by the window watching rain fall.
The music has an electric-based backbone which is driven by an acoustic guitar sound as you can hear from the up-tempo “Aurora” and the slower songs “The Fountain, The Well” and “Bridges And Freeways”. But, it is a very delicate sound that stays in the background and adds an amazing texture to the songs. It never oppresses the songs, and never becomes over-bearing. This leaves Jason’s gentle, comforting voice to dominate the mixes without ever having to shrill or shout.

Simply put, Jason Daryush has managed to create not just an Ep, but a mood, or an emotion. If you’re tired of gimmicky music without meaning, then pop this into your player. “Three Cities” allows Daryush to showcase his folk-pop style with radio-friendly tunes. There are no tiresome pop qualities to Jason’s songs; each one is real and true and stands on its own, like a perfectly cut gemstone. This is for anyone who enjoys relaxing melodies and a comforting voice.
Each song contributes to a fine collection of polished and earnest tunes underpinned by Jason’s heartfelt vocals and lyrics. I recommend “Three Cities” to anyone who enjoys the classic singer-songwriter styles of yesterday with an interest in today’s instrumentation. The Ep is smooth and sweet and creates a great ambience for people who just want to relax while listening to mellow but well-crafted tunes.
Another reason this Ep is such a joy to listen to is the balance and flow of the songs. The rhythms, melodies, lyrics, and harmonies of each song are done wonderfully and simply. One of the best tracks, “Aurora,” is a tender, beautiful, and bittersweet love song, done without the kitsch and predictability reminiscent of many ‘love ballads’. Jason Daryush deserves some recognition for the wisdom, beauty, and heartfelt emotion of this release. Grab it, you’ll love it.
