GIBRALTAR THE LION AWAKES The Book Of Ebon Chapter: 1 is the first release of an official Hip Hop album from Gibraltar. It was released on the 29th of April 2013. The album which contains 10-tracks features: Tito Portu, Don Spider, Jay-E, Amotion, Kaniero, Chilem & Ebon. As well as Producers: GatoBeats, Norwik, Da Poet, Xhelazz & Ebon.
50% of sales from the album will go to the charity World Vision. World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice. Working in nearly 100 countries around the world, World Vision serves all people, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, or gender.
This definitely reached my expectations as a first official hiphop album release from GIBRALTAR. There are many great featured guest appearances on this album, and I think they also have great producers on the boards too. As you go on through the album you just keep hearing different sounds. There are no similar tracks on this album while the Producers are pretty unique and the music is not repetitive at all.
On many of the tracks, a message of piercing social commentaries strike close to the bone, no matter who you are or where you live. The songs from the album points out faults in every aspect of the social spectrum and packs a powerful punch. I gathered this much from watching the videos and the tone of the raps, as much of the album is in Spanish (or even some Llanito I think, but for lack of knowledge I am not sure about this).
Even though there are plenty of politically angry emcees that join EBON on this album, most of these artists have one thing in common. They’re personable, often truthful, and make you feel connected to their messages in one way or another, whether you understand the language or not. Simple technique and passionate raps make EBON and all the guest performers’ just plain accessible, as they reach out to listeners through the spoken word.
GIBRALTAR THE LION AWAKES The Book Of Ebon Chapter: 1 talks about several social and political issues, such as corrupt corporations and government, unfair socio-economic practices, political freedom, racism and equality, as well as issues strictly pertinent to Gibraltar’s state-of-affairs.
The standout tracks for me are: “Mis Amigos”, “The Gibraltar & Spain Problem”, “La Salvacion”, “The Return La Onda & Solar Messiahs”, “La Libertad”, “Burn Down Babylon” and “Ancient Mafia”.
If you’re looking for an honest perspective on all that’s wrong with the world today, grab this album. The only tiny little drawback may be the language barrier, but otherwise every song is listenable, due to the impressive word flow and music productions.
Plus if you also take into account that GIBRALTAR THE LION AWAKES The Book Of Ebon Chapter: 1 is seriously trying to break down barriers, then the language barrier must also be broken, and here is as good a place to start as any! Buy the album and help a good cause like World Vison in the process.
