The album Mala Herencia by Singer-songwriter and Producer Garcia Lopez, was awarded as one of the best 20 Musical Productions of 2013 in Puerto Rico by La Fundacion Nacional Para La Cultura Popular, while the Music Video for the song “Te siento” was awarded as the best Music video of 2013 by The Rincon International Film Festival.
When I listened to Mala Herencia (of which I think the English translation means “Bad Inheritance”), I didn’t think wow this is really good or something like that. When I listened to it I just got a strong feeling. This album gives the listener such a high; no drug could ever hope to give. On every track you can just feel the energy and passion from it. Some tracks are so atmospheric and beautiful you just want to close your eyes and listen, while other tracks are far more upbeat but just as beautiful and you can’t help but to start moving to it.
Garcia Lopez dishes out a great blend of Reggae, Latin Fusion and World Music, all smothered in great guitar picking and strumming, amazing vocals and crisp melodies. Scrape away all the cliches about reggae and focus exclusively on this music; the notes, the melodies, the transitions, the accents, the bass lines, the song structures and most importantly the meticulous attention to detail cleverly hidden under the genre mixing.
Garcia Lopez and his recording crew are remarkably talented. I urge anyone with a hint of any musical background whatsoever; to give Mala Herencia a spin and put an intelligent ear to what lurks behind the vocal melodies. An intelligent, sensitive ear will sense the energy within these grooves along with the remarkable arrangements. The lyrics too ( according to what I can gather from my poor translations, as the album is in Spanish) has sharp wit, a biting sense of humor, while certain messages seriously hits the nerves in your stomach, leaving you breathless.
Mala Herencia showcases 12 tracks of which my personal favorites are: “Cuando No Pasa Nada”, “Mala Herencia”, “Parentesis”, “Techos de Crisal”, “Arenas Blancas”, “Te Siento” and “La Alegria de Estar Juntos”.
I can’t describe how perfect this album is. It is an independent release that should be considered as one of the best releases of any genre during the last year. Garcia Lopez is such an amazing musician. His vocals are so strong and soulful, and he’s great on guitar and piano, as well as everything else that he does on this album.
The sound is eclectic. The music is beautiful, intense, and a total hypnotic expression that can easily be listened to from start to finish. In Mala Herencia, Garcia Lopez absorbs different styles and turns it into a musical form that takes ubiquitous, eclectic rhythms and glues them together into something total new.
You’ll end up loving Garcia Lopez after just the first 2 tracks!
