After playing in multiple bands over the past 6 years, Jake Epiphone decided to start his own rock band. Giving it everything he had, Jake hunkered down in Red Door Studios in Melbourne for a week and recorded CULZEAN’s debut self-titled EP. Teaming up with old mates from previous bands, Stevie J and Ash joined CULZEAN for the ride, cramming themselves into a small rehearsal studio for days on end to bring punters the best possible live show they could. Bringing Nick into the CULZEAN mix made the punk rock band complete and gave them a whole new attitude.
The winning formula of CULZEAN is a mixture of totally different styles, Brit vocal and lyric, punk-emo rhythm guitars and neck-breaking metal guitar soloing. This 5 track Ep is a combination of strong melodies, smart and exciting arrangement, breath-taking guitar solos. The key to CULZEAN is that they just combine things that we already know in smarter and more effective way.
Similar to bands like Jimmy Eat World, Green Day and Blink-182, CULZEAN have found a niche for themselves in that they really pour their hearts out into the music and do it with catchy melodies, which is somewhat of a forgotten staple in music nowadays.
With their raging rhythms, crystal leads, and captivating vocals, CULZEAN prove themselves worthy to be set apart from the more generic and uninteresting punk acts or the bland vapidity of the once intriguing emo movement. This is a group that you can proudly blare on your stereo or MP3 player and anyone with any real taste in modern rock can’t touch you.
For those of you who are not slaves to genre labels and don’t suffer a heart attack at the thought of someone you don’t know, you might want to try this Ep. It is strong musically as well as lyrically. When I first heard CULZEAN I didn’t expect to like them, however, their debut Ep really impressed me. This band is extremely different from the norm. Lyrically and musically they bring something new to the table, mainly, originality.
Their lyrics are intriguing, metaphoric, and at times ironic. The songs are fast, loud, and brilliant. As mentioned before CULZEAN has managed to blend genres to create a sound totally and completely their own. My personal favorites are Bad Influence, Been Here For Too Long, Running With Safety Scissors and Fight For The Sun. So 4 out of 5 ain’t bad!
However, there isn’t a single track on this Ep that isn’t good. From top to bottom, this is a great Ep. CULZEAN is not trying to be groundbreaking nor revolutionary, they just really rock!
Once you have listened to the Ep a few times, heard the lyrics and understood what they are about, you will be blown away at how powerful each song’s emotion and message hits you. What I love most is that these aren’t the kind of songs that you get tired of after a few weeks of nonstop play, but every time you listen to this Ep, you’ll get something new out of the experience.

I’ve been frequenting The gigs of Culzean for awhile now, and their shows have been some of my favourite gigs I’ve seen. Always so full of energy, and Jake Epiphone is always willing to get amongst the crowd and dance with amongst the crowd, his trusty Fok 1 or Fok 2 in hand, while shredding his amazing solos. That and he likes to jump on things, if you’re the owner of a venue considering booking these guys, make sure you’ve invested in sturdy tables
