Blupa Music: “Yellow Dog” sizzles with retro-originality and some tasty electric guitar!

Blupa Music is the indie-folk-rock-blues-jazz project of guitarist and singer-songwriter Geir Erlend Roev aka GER, who has just released his EP “Yellow Dog”. All instruments on the EP are played by GER except the drums which are played by Will Jones, and the trumpet which is handled by Jake Painter. The EP was recorded and mixed by GER at Blupa Studio and Mastered by Tom Woodhead at Hippocratic Mastering.

You would be hard pressed to find any song on this collection that doesn’t please the ears. Each song weaves a landscape from familiar sounds of the past with a modern thread of brilliant music craftsmanship that has been all but absent from music for a very long time.

Blupa-Music-400I really enjoy that the songs flip back and forth from calmer to more upbeat bringing a greater feel of variety. Geir Erlend Roev brings a marvel to the songwriting and intensity behind the emotions of each song. My personal highlights on the EP are “Word of Mouth” and “Lovers of “Eternity”, but “Yellow Dog” and “Revolution Blues” do not fall far behind.

This Norwegian artist has created something special. The EP, from start to finish, shows several genuine musical qualities that are usually not seen in the mainstream market. Catchy melodies, deep lyrics, great delivery, and all topped off with unflinching emotion that shows no sign of trepidation. This guy is a natural, and the fact that he has gotten my attention in such a big way is saying a lot. I’m usually somewhat critical of new music, considering how we’re always being subjected to sugar coated, mass produced garbage as of late.

Listening to GER, you can simply absorb his deliberately minimalist indie-folk sound as it is, or you can identify the influences that color his music. Smatterings of Dire Straits, Tom Petty, Jethro Tull, Dawes and Nick Drake may come to mind, as the tracks on “Yellow Dog” sizzle with retro-originality and some tasty electric guitar.

Simply put, Geir Erlend Roev writes his own music in a way that is both poetic and accessible. He has an uncanny sense of his world and is able to convey that through lyric and music. He is extremely melodic as well as being an adept guitar player; most of all, he sings from the heart where we discover his tenderness, vulnerability and honesty.

GER will almost certainly draw a special group of people towards his music. He is not polished and tied-up in a corporate package. Instead he is creating inspiring music. If you are tired of all the same old repetitive pop songs that are out these days and into real talented artists that write their own songs and play their own music. Then you will certainly enjoy Blupa Music.
