Bifunkal is a two-piece band based in Chicago that believes in live looping, vocal bass, and the power of rock.Bifunkal is Hershyl Edwards (drums, vocal bass, loops, vocals) and Jesse Crydeman (guitar, loops, vocals). Hershyl is a unique bird, in that he sings the bass lines (into an octave pedal) while playing drums. Sometimes he even loops the vocal bass, and then sings–all while playing drums.
Triceratops is the first single off the new Bifunkal album entitled Animals. Triceratops features the guest vocal effects of My Boy Elroy (Digital Tape Machine, Liquid Soul)
The track is full of rumbling bass lines courtesy of Hershyl Edwards, who with Jesse Crydeman lays the bottom on the indescribably funky “Triceratops”. There’s just something about funk that makes its appeal so widespread and long-lasting. Maybe it’s because it was, and still is, a true universal art form, that crosses musical genres and racial barriers.
Bands like Bifunkal take the music and add their own distinct mark to it. This track will satisfy those who seek out the music rather than the people associated with it, a living testament that real music speaks to all and not just to a certain denomination.
If I could only use one word to describe the way that Bifunkal plays music, what would it be? Words like funk and soul may come to mind. But the word that I would use most, to describe their playing, has to be ‘groove’. But Bifunkal don’t just groove, they groove hard, and their groove is really tight.
Edwards’ bass runs alone, will shake the foundation of your house down, while Crydeman’s guitar hooks will make you feel like you’re in the front row at a live show, with the sound system aimed right between your ears.
There is not one single flaw or bad lick on this recording, only guaranteed chills, shakes and funk for the sake of funk!
Currently when it comes to tight, creative, guitar-driven funk arrangements, I think Bifunkal stands alone.
Just ‘turn it up’ and you will dance… you MOTHER!!!
