Avishay Mizrav’s passion for music and guitars started when he was 8 years old and since then he has been relentlessly pursuing perfection with the electric six-stringed instrument and music composition.
At the age of 16, Avishay started playing in his first band, a metal group called “Disharmony” and after two decades of playing with several bands, his path has lead to a musical evolution which has taken him to his debut album, “Forgotten Melodies”, which he wrote, recorded and mixed.
The final mastering phase of the album, was done by Maor Appelbaum at Maor Appelbaum Mastering – California – U.S.A (F5 – David Ellefson, Yngwie Malmsteen, Halford, Therion and many others).
Two demo tracks from ‘Forgotten Melodies’ also achieved First Place in the OURSTAGE Instrumental Channel. Respectively ‘Radical Emotions’ and ‘Knight Templar’, while this last song also reached the Semi-Finals in the ISC (International Song Competition).
On “Forgotten Melodies”, the progressive rock rhythms and melodics created by Avishay Mizrav succeeds in capturing that cleverly tasteful ‘Satriani-like’ sound, by largely playing on a strength that both artists share. The gift for wordless storytelling.
Mizrav has developed an effective method with melody and song craft, by writing guitar-based jams that have the equivalent of a verse-chorus-verse pop construction, making his musical pieces easily memorable to listeners.
His songs also have melodic constructions, flexible enough to allow for technically complex guitar solo variations but strong enough to keep things from devolving into a series of tedious, intellectual exercises and simple scale exploration.
Throughout the album you get the notion that Mizrav’s position in the guitar hero pantheon falls squarely between Jeff Beck and Eddie Van Halen, but unlike most guitar heroes he gives ample space to an impeccable backing band, whose explosively tight rock rhythms lay down the perfect canvas for Mizrav’s dazzling guitar solos.
Playing testimony to this fact is the title track, ‘Forgotten Melodies’, where the band furiously hurtle through the rollercoaster rhythms, displaying an excellent and intense mastery of their instruments.
Other album highlights include the album opener ‘Knight Templar’ with it’s metal driven beat, six-string riffs and keyboard melodics. The swampy and dirty electric guitar hooks on ‘The Life And Death Of Elfi Theda’ as well as the ethereal sounding lead melody on the mid tempo track, ‘Moods’.
However, ‘Forgotten Melodies’ shines with solid, soul-searching guitar instrumentals and you would be hard pressed to find a track that does not grab and hold your attention.
Truly outstanding tracks, from a personal point of view, are definitely ‘A Journey To The End Of The World’, ‘Radical Emotions’ and in particular ‘These Harmonies’ which features a guitar duet with Avi Harazi . These songs all showcase the extraordinary technique and passion of Avishay Mizrav’s guitar playing as well as his compelling song composition and creative musical arranging.
Obviously the entire backing band on ‘Forgotten Melodies’ has contributed in a major way to the intensity of this album, but a special word of appraisal is required for Rom Gov, whose drumming often shares center stage with Mizrav’s highpowered guitar on many tracks.
Gov’s drumming is solid, clean and so ferociously dynamic, adding a third dimension to an already superb level of musicality achieved on the album.
If you’re a lover of high-powered electric guitar instrumentals, don’t miss this album.
