A 6-piece band of incongruous musicians well versed in the art of turning heads, A Verbal Equinox is an Alternative/Experimental/Avant-Garde Rock band hailing from New Jersey. Since their formation in late 2010, they have released their debut album “And The Ringmaster Is Pleased To Introduce…” and have gained a substantial amount of popularity and notoriety, currently being endorsed by Arkaik Clothing and having shared a stage with bands such as D.R.U.G.S, William Control, Ice Nine Kills, Get Scared and The Birthday Massacre.
With influences ranging from dark cabaret and vaudeville to swing/jazz, you’re sure to hear it from piano man, William Sunshine. At the same time the band incorporate Progressive/Metal influenced lead guitar supplied by Michael Bridda, while Mario Conte brings drum styles ranging from hardcore to swing/jazz, accompanied by some ska-punk/alternative rock sounding bass provided by Jonathon Maisto. Dan Chetnik juggles the guitar, saxophone, clarinet, flute, and other instruments, and it’s all topped off by vocalist Cheska Colombo, whose influences are rooted in punk rock.
I would recommend this music to anyone that is tired of the current radio hits, and is searching for something amazingly different. A Verbal Equinox is perched somewhere between Queen, Meat Loaf, the Ark and The Darkness. They display an uncanny gift for melody that suits their searing vocals and outrageously gorgeous musical backdrops. They don’t compose simple songs, but short pieces of cabaret that elaborate into energetic anthems ready to take your breath away.

This is a truly unique band whose manic originality you need to experience. It’s an experience you won’t easily forget either. Five guys and a girl knocking the hell out of a plethora of instruments , ranting and raving across four octaves, all while keeping absolutely impeccable rhythm and melody. Of the eleven tracks featured on “And The Ringmaster Is Pleased To Introduce...”, every single song has a completely different approach. Thanks to their high level of energy, they create a rock carnival that is undeniably catchy.
On first listen, some of their music may seem chaotic and unpredictable, but the more you listen, the more you’ll understand how meticulously well-structured the songs really are. In fact, the song titles alone will knock you right out: “We Killed Amanda Palmer, Mystery Solved” or “And When They Asked About The Blood On The Lockers, I Got A Little Nervous” and “If We’re Not Careful, We’ll Turn Into Alcoholics. I Mean…Catholics”. Not to mention “¡Nüburbåtizé!” of course!
There is no point in selecting highlights or standout tracks, in a body of work that requires a complete listen to be thoroughly enjoyed, suffice to say that “And The Ringmaster Is Pleased To Introduce...”, is hands down one of the most original albums I have ever heard in a while.
A Verbal Equinox produce a kind of refined madness mixed with excellent songwriting and an eclectic selection of instruments, added to superb all-round performances by its members, and particularly strong vocals that are hard to ignore.
If you are new to this band, prepare to have your face melted off. If not, you already know what I’m talking about, and agree, that they are one of the most original and enterprising bands out there right now.
