One of The Good Girls just got better!
It’s been almost 25 years since the debut of The Good Girls’ album, ALL FOR YOUR LOVE, hit the charts, earning one Top 5 single, “Your Sweetness,” and two more top 1o singles, “I Need Your Love” and “Love Is Like An Itchin’ In My Heart.” Singing on those tracks was Shireen Elaine Crutchfield along with her two girlfriends, who formed the R&B group The Good Girls. The group, signed to the legendary Motown Records, had success from the late 1980s through the early 1990s.
Throughout the years, Shireen has continued to pursue her interest in the entertainment industry, successfully branching out into modeling, movies, TV, and commercials, and has worked with some of the top names in the business including, Giorgio Armani, Calvin Klein, Chanel, Steve Harvey, Will Smith, Geena Davis, John Lithgow, and Cameron Diaz among others.
Shireen – whose musical influences include Phyllis Hyman, Sade, Diana Ross, and the 70’s singer-song writer era – is now the mother of 3, and is back to take center stage with her latest single release, ‘What’s Better Than Love’.
Well Shireen Crutchfield is the real thing. The original. She’s old school in a very positive sense. She is definitely not one those up and coming neo-RnB divas, determined to make a name for themselves with vocal acrobatics flaunted over Europop rhythms. Although you may find some electro-remixes of her song doing the rounds across the web. Shireen has a world of singing talent. She’s got some serious lungs and sticks to what singers of her caliber should be doing and that is powerful mid-tempo songs or ballads.
She gets down to the nitty gritty with a fresh new look on an old school R&B love theme. ‘What’s Better Than Love’ instantly earns classic status as Shireen solidifies her place in my memory with a great performance. This song is one for the ages. She sings this out with soul and passion, but above all with ease. Shireen’s voice has a natural inflection that identifies with the everyday person who may be in love. That is what makes her different from other female R&B singers today.
She breathes feeling and life into ‘What’s Better Than Love’. Shireen has been around for years and no doubt will still be for many more to come, gauging by the smooth groove she still carries. And boy she still looks so good too! Few R&B divas are able to sustain and transmit the classy R&B aura that automatically transpires through Shireen’s voice and music. Mary J Blige has that same warm vibe and sure-footedness. It’s that ‘feeling’ you get when you’re close to a real woman, and rather more removed from the coy, playfulness, of let’s say, your common Beyoncè or Rihanna progeny.
Shireen doesn’t need rap beats to make her voice or message get noticed, she can proudly do it herself. So when she sings ‘What’s Better Than Love’, you already know the answer! And while her rise back to the top may be a long one, in this dangerously mutable mainstream market, it is refreshing to hear an artist who exudes such honesty, sex appeal, attitude, and soul, all while performing great music.
If there is one thing Shireen Elaine Crutchfield makes you understand from listening to her songs, it’s that this is exactly the way she is. Shireen is back on the come up, and I have nothing but admiration for this beautiful and talented songstress.
