Hypno: “Harakiri Club” is a flawless EP that succeeds at every turn!

Hypno grew up in a biracial household in Evanston IL, listening to funk, soul, and jazz. He started writing poetry as a kid and started rapping after getting into DOOM, Madlib, Flying Lotus and other Stones Throw Affiliates in high school.

Hypno recently dropped his 5-track EP, “Harakiri Club”. Fans of Hypno will be neither blown away, nor surprised by the delivery and lyrical output on this release. Here he sticks to his mouth-full, relaxed flow which could easily have folks mistaking him for a long lost member of the Wu-Tang Clan. Never seeking to impress his fan base or new listeners with obnoxiously abstract content, or spell-binding flow/speed, Hypno forces you to hit the rewind button to hear the mostly creative tongue-in-cheek disses which harkens to the battle days of old school hip-hop.

“Harakiri Club” is a flawless EP that succeeds at every turn with the enthralling production of CD Moura, BlakKat, RayAyy, beatmasta.oknd and Musikal. As usual, Hypno brings his unique flow, rhyme scheme and lyrics. Making the EP a breath of fresh air to the now money driven society of modern rap. Hypo never disappoints no matter what producer he is collaborating with on this recording. His use of the English language is quite masterful. Musically, the track I like best is the jazzy production of “Game Trails” [Prod. RayAyy], while the tune that best showcases Hypno’s flow and play on words, is without a doubt, the monster rhyming on “Dream Sequence” [Prod. Musikal].

“Harakiri Club” is exactly what hiphop is all about – clever, sharp rap-verses and funky instrumental beats. Hypo is one of those rappers you just have to like. He’s a modern poet and his rapping is unparalleled. It’s not about rims and bling, and that’s what defines this album more than anything else. It’s not shallow, it’s ingenious and slaps other rappers in such a way that it hurts. From Hypo’s lyrical brilliance to the masterful production, “Harakiri Club” never gets boring.

When you find an Ep or album that you can put into your media player, press play and not press the skip button until the album is finished, and then press repeat again, you know you found yourself a gem; which is exactly what this EP is. If Hypo keeps getting together with such great producers who enhance his lyrical excellence like they do on “Harakiri Club”, then he definitely will not be off the radar for long!
