CIKATRI$ are a self-proclaimed “avant-garde keytar-punk” band, hailing from Stockholm, Sweden. Using a keytar as their sonic nucleus, CIKATRI$ instrumentation include the stylophone, drums, theremin, distorted bass, fast guitars and French language lyrics.. CIKATRI$, is comprised of Aurélie on keytar and vocals, Anton on guitar, Robert on drums and Jocke on bass.
Their third album, a double 7” EP titled “Aie ! – le trois” is available on Bandcamp along with their other releases. This is the first CIKATRI$ recording I’ve ever heard. I had never heard any of their music, only reading about people who liked the band. The songs on this 5-track EP are just awesome and beautiful and hard to wear out. It reminds of sunny days and enjoying life with your friends.
If you have a pretty open mind about music, you really should go listen to this as fast as you can. It’s really terrific and honest music. I’ve never heard a band whose music flows as quickly and simply as CIKATRI$’s sound. Oh yeah, the lyrics are probably great too, if you take the time to understand them, being in French. But the music will be enough to convince you!
Utilizing their trademark mix of 60’s flavored French pop, garage grooves and other punk-influenced exotica, this EP will surprise music fans. Full of percolating rhythms, sparkling keytars and shimmering guitars, CIKATRI$ sound like no one else.
On “Aie ! – le trois”, CIKATRI$ perfect their pop song strengths. “Qui le fera ?” is a slice of pure pop a la mode that will make you want to spend the rest of your life listening to Aurélie’s voice. “Tombée Amoureuse” is effortlessly laid back dream pop which explodes into funky fast-paced rhythms. The grit-rock marching beat of “Quand la Nuit Tombe sur Nous” will sweep you off your feet, together with “L’Espace”. Everything here is intensely urgent, organic, lovely and tremendously addictive.
From the first track to the last, CIKATRI$ flits about in a bewitching hummingbird frenzy, lighting one spark and then another, until each flame turns into a musical fire. There are too few bands like this, and strangely they seem to be making a living doing their thing, instead of basking in praise or bending over to mainstream compromises.
The band will hit American soil during March, where they will at two official SXSW showcases in Austin, TX. To coincide with their USA tour, the band will be releasing a limited-edition cassette tape, appropriately named “The Texas EP,” which will premiere at their first SXSW showcase on March 19 at BD Riley’s.
