We recently listened-in, to 10 tracks from Benson Taylor’s catalog to try and get a close up glimpse of the man’s artistry. And right from the opening piece “Funny Times” we were thrilled by Benson’s ‘soundtracks’ that reaches out and grabs one’s soul from the first listening. This is music that soars even without having the benefit of any film imagery to support it – this is the craft of a master-composer.
Benson Taylor has crafted scores that entrance the spirit. The rolling percussion on “Catch Me” provides us with multiple solid action and ever-increasing intensity until the pounding fury breaks into the quietly rich and sweepingly beautiful orchestrations of “Neverland”.
Most of Benson’s compositions are purely beautiful, simply-stirring music that soars from the source into the soul; exposing one to an array of emotions, themes and motifs. There are moments of lightness (“Maisie’s Home”), thrilling action (“Persian Promise”), and beauty and tenderness (“One Day Soon”), such as I have not heard in many a soundtrack in years.
These compositions are for people who love powerful music – where the scores are sincerely passionate and soulful. I’m not sure if these 10 musical pieces already form part of published soundtracks, belonging to TV, Film or videogames but they certainly make gorgeous scores and a mesmerizing listen. Each one, containing intricately and beautifully crafted music.
Hearing scores like these, reminds us of why Benson won ‘Best Original Music’ for his score to ‘Fear of Water’ at the Monaco International Film Festival in 2013. His music is never passé, pushy or over-wrought. He is capable of conveying emotion with grandeur and an epic sweep, while also being able to convey a sense of quiet intimacy when required.
Benson Taylor’s is a master at expertly pushing the audience’s buttons in all the right places, with musical scores that are beautiful to the ear, intellectually stimulating to the brain and stirring to the soul. You couldn’t ask much more from any music composer!
