Reading Steiner and Black Magick are definitely on top of things!
The Merge, had their (almost) self-titled 3-track, hip-hop Ep in the works for about two-years. “Merge” is entirely self-produced, mastered, written and arranged by members, Reading Steiner and Black Magick.
Though not my absolute favorite genre, I’ve been listening to Rap for on 30 years now. 80s hip-hop meant something, the rhymes, the beats; everything was fresh, new and original. The nineties may even have been better with conscious articulate rapping. Hip-Hop these days is almost all about the same things. The beats aren’t as original and the meaning to it all has gone down the drain. Real hip-hop heads can attest to this.
Enter The Merge. These guys have originality, fresh beats which are minimal and raw, while the content of their rhymes spit hardcore and acid. This Ep lets you know how powerful hip hop was in the 90s, with its creativity and awareness, as both Reading Steiner and Black Magick remind me of that era.
If you’re looking for good raw, uncut hiphop, The Merge will deliver. Their menacing, cryptic style serves them well on would-be cult classics 107 Niggas, Pre Superbowl Elway and Libra, making them uncrowned champions of the underground.
I was not a fan of this duo until this album dropped. To be honest, I wasn’t even familiar with them until this release. Which makes their discovery all the sweeter. The Merge have heavy punching flows while they use very unusual samples; not like every other producer who tries to copy the Neptunes, Timbaland or Dr. Dre.
This album isn’t for the weak-minded, casual hip hop listener. It is a testament to clever, free speech and the impact that it can have on hip-hop. Lyrically it stands incredibly strong, with intelligent wordplay, similes, punch lines and just pure acid illness pouring out of its pores; 107 Niggas being a prime example of an ingeniously crafted song.
“Pre Superbowl Elway” doesn’t fall too far behind, as The Merge bring raw lyricism that rips the head off the track and makes you want to bash somebody’s face in.
Merge by The Merge doesn’t disappoint. It’s raw, gritty and uncut, with impetuous beats. Their lyrics are tight and they say anything they want. These guys are definitely on top of things!
