After his critically acclaimed Project 7 multimedia conceptual project, which included a complete soundtrack – Sin’s Disciple, and a stunningly-illustrated novel – Dante’s Disciple, and also performing in front of 120,000 people with reality TV star Vanilla Ice in Berlin (Germany), Marty McKay is back with a new take on the 30-year-old hit track, “Broken Wings”, originally performed by legendary rock group Mr. Mister.
The Swiss rapper infuses the Slädu powered instrumental, with his lyrical rap flow alongside some powerful female vocals by Marina Santelli. Eric Racy (LA), who has produced artists like Nas, Pharrell and Katy Perry, has created this completely fresh interpretation of “Broken Wings”, giving it a modern landscape and rich urban sound.
Anyone who considers themselves a rap enthusiast must be encouraged by the influx of new talent like Marty McKay streaming in. He is making a strong push towards the front of the line. And he is making it from far across the ocean, which is a major feather in his cap.
Marty McKay’s delivery is loud, forceful and clear; he is able to spit his rhymes with great rhythm and flow over an impressive instrumental mix. He isn’t trying to be the next ‘anybody’ either, like most rappers. His primary talent isn’t in far-fetched storytelling, it’s in his intense flow, riding the beat and the way riding the beat makes you just feel good and nod your head. The quality of the music behind the lyrics too, is far and beyond anything I’ve heard in quite a while; very refreshing and powerful.
You can hear the influences of alternative rock and electronica throughout, while Marty still keeps it urban, raw and streetwise. Lyrically, there is definite brilliance peppered throughout, as Marty holds out against Santelli’s soaring vocals. He has a deft rapping style that switches up often enough within the song so that whenever you start to feel comfortable he brings something new, lyrically.
On “Broken Wings”, Marty McKay continues his evolution, and we get to reap the benefits. Overall Marty has shown that he’s getting stronger with each release. He’s not asking you to buy this track, he’s telling you that it’s a must have instant classic and that your collection will be missing something without this twisted urban remake of “Broken Wings”.
