Luna Sopor: ‘Cobalt’ -a delicious blend of polished punk and guitar-roaring alternative rock!

Luna Sopor is an original high energy Rock Band from the San Francisco Bay Area. The band was started by bassist Troy Szabo, guitar player Jeff Janow, and drummer Marie Szabo in 2008. The Bay Area-based band released its eponymously titled debut album in 2011, which was recorded at the famous Golden Gate Studio in San Francisco, receiving a good amount of radio airplay and critical acclaim.

Luna Sopor has now released their full length sophomore album entitled ‘Cobalt’. The band has also been joined by Jayne D. on vocals, bringing a new dimension to their sound. The album was Recorded and Mixed by Zack Phillips at Freq Lab Recording in Motor Studio, San Francisco and Mastered by Andy Bartow at Black Dog Mastering Studio, Tampa Bay, Fl.

Luna Sopor’s ‘Cobalt’ demonstrates an enormous move forward from their self-titled debut. This album shimmers with rich, warm and fuzzy guitars, thick and powerful drums, thumping basslines, soaring bittersweet vocals, and very effective hooks, which the production intensifies with a slick and polished, luster, however very effectively leaving the raw, true-grit sound of the band totally intact.

The album’s highlights include “Candy Crush”, which opens the recording with a high-speed, powerful punk and metal-flavored edge, then Jayne D.’s scathing vocals on “Cake” maintains the energy, while the song incorporates a stinging guitar solo and heavy grinding riffs. This is followed by the electrifying “Future” and builds up to the climax of the awesome “North Star” and “High Roller Coaster”, where the lead vocals and harmonies soar up and down together on a magic carpet ride of colorful guitar chords and thundering riffs.

The sound switches on the brilliantly moving “City of Lights”, which demonstrates emotion that you just can’t help but feel as you hear Jayne D. make the transition from a pleasant verse, into a tortured and soulful chorus then back again. Reminding so much of one of the most underrated female artists of our time, the bold and brazen-voiced Linda Perry, and she’s just as stunningly attractive too!

The album continues forward without losing momentum through the tracks, “Alchemy”, the sprawling guitars sounds of “House of Lies”, the crashing punk of “Hands Up”, the changing rock tempos of “Better” plus the eclectic and forcefully driven, instrumental closer, “Undertow”.

‘Cobalt’ is raw emotion without being too garage rock, angry but still kick-butt sweet in places. What gives it an edge is the songwriting, the band’s all round solid performances, Jeff Janow’s extraordinary guitar riffs and solos, and without a doubt the cherry on top is presented by Jayne D. distinctive lead vocals.

Luna Sopor’s ‘Cobalt’ is a delicious blend of polished punk and guitar-roaring alternative rock. It’s exciting and full of energy, yet it has the rich level of depth and contemplation that we’ve come to associate with great artists. If you want to bolster you rock music collection, go and get this album. I swear you won’t be disappointed!
