The founding members of Ghost Tribe Fires, Jon Veitch (multi-instrumentalist, lyricist, and vocals) and Liz Downs (drums and vocals) started gigging in 2011 while doing small tours up and down the West Coast and also played in Austin, Texas during a Critical Sun showcase at SXSW. In 2013, Tyler Hewett (Vocals and Piano) was asked to join, positively shifting the band’s focus towards the piano. Going forward, Ghost Tribe Fires will have live guest appearances by other notable musicians in the northwest music community.

For their single and video releases, Ghost Tribe Fires have collaborated with producer Jon Goff of “Self-Adhesive Records,” as well as director Brad Strain of “Scared of Genre Films.” In early 2015 Ghost Tribe Fires will release their debut EP. In the meantime they will have 2 singles “Reaction” and “Paradise” ready for download on iTunes during December 2014, which you may pre-order starting now.

Everything about Ghost Tribe Fires works beautifully, combining traditional indie and alternative sounds with subtle nuances and production flourishes that build on what’s come before them, the band develop what they call Symphonic Alternative. It’s like a revival of raw garage-rock rhythms with elaborated 70s keyboard induced progressive-rock, sonic layers.

Popular music these days seems to be more about talent shows than it does about a bunch of people getting together to write songs and play instruments for the love of music. I have a hard time relating to the talent show type stuff even when there is actually real talent involved. Maybe it’s just my bias given the era from which I come, but the kind of thing Ghost Tribe Fires does sounds so much more real and relatable to my ears.

Both “Reaction” and “Paradise” are soulful, rootsy and vital roots rock played with passion and integrity, while pawing at the mainstream pop core. Ghost Tribe Fires have a rugged Americana flair for melody and substance that rings the bell like a dear old friend on “Paradise”, while the piano-driven rhythm of “Reaction” flies around the room searching for a place to settle down.

The band sounds exceptionally tight and professional, and the music flows with a naturally sincere warmth that reminds you why it matters. Apart from the creatively engaging keyboard arrangements, Ghost Tribe Fires have nothing strange or weird about them, or even going on in their music— it’s just solid songwriting and great playing from the heart. Sometimes that’s more than enough for most bands; with Ghost Tribe Fires it’s pretty close to brilliant!

There are hordes of bands out there that are enormously proficient on their instruments, but musicality is a far more elusive gift. Jon Veitch, Liz Downs and Tyler Hewett have that gift. And they wield it wonderfully on these two songs.

The glorious bridge and chorus of “Reaction” lets you know first time through that there’s more to this band than meets the ear. But Ghost Tribe Fires’ greatest asset is that there is nothing in their music that the average music fan could not appreciate – yet it’s inventive and edgy enough for even the most discerning music fan.
