The group states that the name, Flow States, comes from the fact that when they are in the studio they tend to fall in a “flow state” of mind, because they love the music so much. Flow States is a duo of Eric Flores (producer) and Adam Saltzer (emcee). On their latest track, they are joined by the beautiful Hailey Johnson, who features on vocals in the song.
The single “Summer Shines”, will also be having a video to back it up shortly. Flow States are just on the outset of their careers and say they like to make good vibes for their fans to just kick back and have a good time to.
Their beat is innovative, but never too demanding, while the sounds swoop and crackle in a really human way. Eric Flores blends soft keyboard tinkles with a catchy trip-hop beat, creating an ever-evolving colorful soundscape, whereupon Adam Saltzer lays down his laid back rhymes. Hailey Johnson adds in a sense of melody, which makes this single catchy, hypnotic and truly on par with its peers.

From the opening bars, I knew this was something different, the hazy washed out pianos, the vaguely hip hop beat, and the melancholic melody makes this single hard to resist. Flow States kick-off with the good stuff, with this wholly satisfying release.
This could be classified EDM (Electronic Dance Music) by some, but for me it’s not a dance record. Sure, the duo employs a well-balanced mix of melody and rhythm that is found in some of the best electronic music but while the beat is definitely present; the emphasis tends to be on the melody. That’s why my personal classification would be ELM (Electronic Listening Music). Uncomplicated and palpable, yet experimental and substantial, this single hits home.
Forced under torture, my only negative comment would be about the song’s short length. It has the most classic pop-song length, of 3 minutes and 30 seconds. Something this cool, should last at least double that time. Unless of course “Flow States” have some remixes up their sleeves and this is only the Radio Edit release?
Apart from that, they seem to combine the best of beautiful melodies, IDM beats, and hiphop attitude, with a few sprinkles of ambient tones thrown in. With “Summer Shines”, Flow States sculpts and creates a piece of delightful listening. Hailey Johnson adds the cherry on top!
