Barrett Myers: “the Letting Go” – pure talent and bittersweet melodies

Barrett Myers is a modern troubadour, singing stories of hope out of life’s ups and downs. He’s a fan of music that stirs the spirit, says something meaningful, and is easy on the ears. Midwest Indiana is his home, but the mountains of Colorado are running through his veins. After 2013’s critically acclaimed “The Coming and the Leaving”, Barrett Myers’ sophomore album, “the Letting Go”, is finally here. The overall theme of the seven original songs invites ‘dear souls to find freedom in letting go of what they cling to’.

Spinning “the Letting Go” is a blissful experience. At the outset, you know you are in the hands of a supremely careful artist who has taken pains with every detail. The acoustic driven songs here are subtle and lovely, with a common thread of appreciating our experiences for what they are. Honoring their beauty or sadness, recognizing what really matters, and then moving on. I have so much respect for what Myers stands for here. He writes and plays music that is so in depth that it will take you to a place somewhere in your life. It’s kind of like reading a really good book, you are there.

Though there quite a few upbeat songs, there’s very little cheer in the lyrics. Most of it is dealing with the harsh realities of heartbreak, loss, pain, and regret. The positivity is brought on by the fact that these are the moments that Barrett Myers is finally leaving behind or ‘letting go’, as he says. This long awaited release does not disappoint at all. The emotionally charged lyrics you’d expect from this songwriter are backed up a melodic voice that screams of raw talent.

If you are looking for down to earth Americana music with meaning then look no further. There is no over-produced, pop fodder here. These songs are written for music lovers; not for mass appeal, MTV, or teeny bopper dollars. While today’s Americana or Folk music is filled with songs detailing long drives on back country roads with a beer in the console, this album is haunting, mellow and a modern interpretation of a classic Americana album. Listening to Barrett Myers sing, reminds me of everything that is beautiful about authentic Americana songs. They are true to life and Myers has a way of making you feel every single word, raw and real.

“the Letting Go” is a 7-song masterpiece, interspersed with emotional lyrics, sprawling melodies and gorgeous harmonies, as can be heard on my favorite tracks, “Over You ( Nature’s Song)”, “Let It Go”, “Fifth Story Window” and “Grow” – strictly in that order! If you haven’t yet heard anything else Barrett Myers has done, these songs are a great introduction to his talent. This is the kind of artist you find ‘your own personal song’ with, and after your first listen, you end up listening to it again 10 times in a row.  No flashy lights, no dancing girls, and no sleight of hand needed. “the Letting Go” is pure talent and bittersweet melodies.
