Sarantos: “We Accept The Love We Think We Deserve” – an emotionally abusive relationship

In his career, Sarantos has affronted many serious themes on love and relationships through his vast catalog of songs. For his latest release, he looks at the terrible theme of domestic abuse under its various guises, adding an ulterior twist.  In “We Accept The Love We Think We Deserve”, Sarantos switches the stereotypical roles we’ve become acquainted with. Here it is the male who suffers the emotional abuse by his partner.

Domestic violence happens in many forms including physical, emotional and economic violence, and can affect people of any age. Its violence is about power and control and there are many ways this control can be expressed. Sarantos particularly examines emotional abuse in this song. The aim of emotional abuse is to chip away at a person’s feelings of self-worth and independence. In an emotionally abusive relationship, a person may feel that there is no way out of the relationship or that without their partner they are worth nothing. Hence “We Accept The Love We Think We Deserve”.

Through this powerful rock song, Sarantos ponders on how emotional abuse can feel equally as destructive and damaging as physical abuse and can do a terrible amount of damage to a person’s psychological state of being. If someone is hurting you, it can be very scary and it may be extremely hard to even recognize and know how you can stop it. Sarantos sings:

“It doesn’t seem quite so bad to me, Getting yelled at daily
I do it for reasons others just can’t believe, I take the abuse so easily
I sit emotionless, I look so strange, Thru the words, the bruises and the blame
My body language just doesn’t change, And my reasons stay the same”

It is important to remember that no one has the right to treat you this way and that you deserve to be loved in the same way that you give it. If in your relationship you don’t get it…get out! Yet once again, Sarantos has proven to be an able, eloquent and caring singer-songwriter.

Of his latest release, “We Accept The Love We Think We Deserve”, which is from his upcoming 2nd studio album called “Close Your Eyes”, Sarantos explained the concept in his own words: “This a powerful rock song about domestic violence in our society today, It seems like this topic was in the news a lot in the last year between the NFL, Bill Cosby and so many other stories that made headlines. My heart goes out to the victims. I wrote this song to not only start a conversation on the matter but to hopefully help others find a solution. This is a hard rock

song about a man who has made many mistakes in his life. He constantly takes emotional abuse from his partner. Somewhere along the way, he has lost his faith. Thru the words, the bruises and the blame though he stays right there… Why does he stay right there? I hope this song helps drive home the message throughout the world that domestic abuse is simply not ok.”

33% of any music-related sales profits from this song are going straight to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), has worked since 1978 to make every home a safe home. NCADV works to raise awareness about domestic violence; to educate and create programming and technical assistance, to assist the public in addressing the issue, and to support those impacted by domestic violence. It is the mission of NCADV to work for major societal changes necessary to eliminate both personal and societal violence against all women and children.
